THE VILLAGE THAT NEVER LET ANYONE LEAVE
Chapter 15
One year later, Ethan and Maya lived in a small town in Oregon.
They never spoke publicly about Black Hollow.
Nobody would have believed them.
Life became ordinary again.
Almost.
One rainy evening, Maya found an envelope beneath their front door.
No stamp.
No address.
Inside was a photograph.
She stared at it.
Ethan walked over.
“What is it?”
Maya couldn’t answer.
The photograph showed them.
Standing outside their new house.
But the date printed at the bottom was tomorrow.
Ethan slowly took it from her.
On the back was a handwritten sentence.
You thought the village was looking for you.
A second line appeared underneath.
It was looking for a place to begin again.
Maya looked through the window.
Across the street stood an unfamiliar woman.
She was holding a suitcase.
Watching their house.
Then she smiled.
And behind her, barely visible through the rain, stood a wooden sign.
WELCOME TO BLACK HOLLOW.
Ethan’s face went pale.
Because this time, the sign wasn’t pointing toward a village.
It was pointing toward their house.
