THE VILLAGE THAT NEVER LET ANYONE LEAVE
Chapter 14
The city began changing.
People Ethan didn’t know started appearing outside their building.
Photographs appeared in mailboxes.
Names were carved into sidewalks.
And every night at 12:17, the church bell rang.
Even though there was no church nearby.
Maya finally understood.
Black Hollow hadn’t followed them.
It had been inside Ethan all along.
The village wasn’t chasing them.
It was rebuilding itself around him.
Ethan had two choices.
Run again.
Or end it.
He chose the second.
They returned to the mountain.
Not Black Hollow.
The place where it had first existed.
According to his father’s diary, the original mine had been sealed beneath an abandoned church in West Virginia.
They found it.
Inside the mine was the same chamber.
The same stone well.
The same darkness.
But this time, Ethan wasn’t afraid.
He stepped toward it.
The older version of himself appeared.
“You finally understand.”
Ethan nodded.
“This ends with me.”
The older Ethan smiled.
“No.”
He stepped aside.
“It ends with your choice.”
Ethan looked into the darkness.
Thousands of voices whispered his name.
His mother.
His father.
Nora.
People he had never met.
People who had disappeared decades ago.
He closed his eyes.
And remembered everything.
The mountain shook.
The darkness screamed.
The chamber collapsed.
Maya grabbed Ethan.
They ran.
Behind them, the mine disappeared beneath tons of rock.
For the first time, there was silence.
Real silence.
