Nora finally told them the truth.
Black Hollow wasn’t an ordinary village.
Decades earlier, a group of families had settled there after a devastating mining accident.
They discovered something beneath the mountain.
Something they never explained.
Something that supposedly allowed the village to survive.
But there was a condition.
Every generation, outsiders had to be brought into Black Hollow.
Some disappeared.
Some stayed.
And some were sent away with their memories altered.
Ethan was one of those children.
His parents had found him outside the village when he was six months old.
They believed he was an abandoned baby.
They took him home.
They never knew where he came from.
Maya stared at Ethan.
“So why bring him back now?”
Nora looked terrified.
“Because the village is dying.”
“What does that mean?”
“The thing beneath the mountain is failing.”
Ethan shook his head.
“This is insane.”
Nora stepped closer.
“Then explain why every photograph you’ve seen shows the same people.”
Ethan had no answer.
Suddenly, the church windows shattered.
The villagers rushed inside.
Nora screamed.
“RUN!”
They escaped through a side door and raced into the woods.
Behind them, Samuel shouted:
“Ethan!”
Ethan stopped.
Samuel stood at the church entrance.
“You were never supposed to come back.”
Ethan stared at him.
Samuel’s voice changed.
“You were supposed to stay forgotten.”
