THE VILLAGE THAT NEVER LET ANYONE LEAVE
Chapter 3
They stayed.
Not because they wanted to.
Because every road out brought them back.
By morning, Ethan had tried seven different routes.
Every one returned to Black Hollow.
Maya started keeping track.
Road.
Time.
Direction.
Distance.
Every result was identical.
Three hours later, they were sitting inside the town diner.
The waitress placed two coffees on the table.
Maya asked quietly,
“Why can’t we leave?”
The woman looked at her.
Then at Ethan.
Then quickly walked away.
Ethan noticed something.
Every table was occupied.
And every person was watching them.
Maya whispered,
“Do you see that?”
“Yes.”
“Something is wrong here.”
A man at the next table suddenly stood.
He walked toward them.
He was around forty.
His face was pale.
His eyes exhausted.
He leaned down.
“Don’t ask questions.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why?”
The man swallowed.
“Because they’ll notice.”
“Who?”
The man glanced toward the windows.
Everyone outside had stopped moving.
He whispered:
“The village.”
Then he walked away.
Maya looked at Ethan.
“The village?”
Before Ethan could answer, the diner lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every clock inside the restaurant stopped.
12:17.
Every single one.
Maya checked her phone.
12:17.
Ethan checked his watch.
12:17.
Then the church bell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Outside, every villager turned toward the church.
Samuel appeared at the end of the street.
He looked directly at Ethan.
And slowly raised one finger to his lips.
Silence.
