The Single Dad Adopted a Homeless Girl—15 Years Later She Walked Into Court and Saved His Empire
Chapter 9
Sarah’s letter revealed the missing years.
She had discovered that Adrian Cross was using construction companies to move illegal money.
Michael had helped her collect evidence.
But Harris had discovered their investigation.
Sarah knew she was being watched.
She had only one option.
Hide Lily.
She left her daughter near the supermarket where Daniel regularly shopped.
She had chosen him because Michael had told her Daniel was the one person she could trust.
Lily read the letter twice.
Then she began crying.
“She knew you.”
Daniel nodded.
“She trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“But she never told you who I was.”
“She wanted you to have a chance at a normal life.”
Lily looked at him.
“You gave me one.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“No.”
He touched her hand.
“You gave us one.”
They found another clue.
Sarah had left a small key taped beneath the letter.
The key opened a safe deposit box.
Inside was a recording.
Sarah’s voice came through the old audio device.
“If you’re hearing this, Lily is safe.”
Lily covered her mouth.
“She’s talking to me.”
Sarah continued.
“I couldn’t raise you without putting you in danger. I knew Daniel would protect you.”
Daniel looked away.
Sarah’s voice softened.
“One day, they may try to destroy him.”
Lily leaned closer.
“When that happens, don’t fight them with anger.”
A pause.
“Fight them with proof.”
The recording ended.
Lily stared at the device.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew this day would come.”
Daniel nodded.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But they still needed one thing.
Proof that Harris had fabricated the financial records.
Lily began reconstructing the entire money trail.
She spent eighteen hours comparing timestamps.
At sunrise, she found the inconsistency.
The fraudulent transfers had been approved from Daniel’s office.
But Daniel had been on a flight overseas at those exact times.
The login records proved it.
Then Lily found something even more important.
The same device had been used to access the company’s financial system.
Harris’s computer.
She smiled.
“We have him.”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Can it hold up in court?”
“If we authenticate it.”
“How?”
“By making him confirm it himself.”
Daniel stared.
“You’re setting a trap.”
“No.”
Lily closed the laptop.
“I’m giving him a chance to tell the truth.”
Daniel smiled.
“You really are my daughter.”
The next day, Lily requested a private meeting with Harris.
He agreed.
He believed he was walking into a frightened young woman’s desperate attempt to save her family.
He didn’t realize she had already recorded every piece of evidence.
And she knew exactly what question to ask.
