The Single Dad Adopted a Homeless Girl—15 Years Later She Walked Into Court and Saved His Empire
Chapter 11
The trial lasted four days.
Lily testified for six hours.
She explained the money trail in language even the jury could understand.
She showed how shell companies moved money.
How digital signatures were stolen.
How accounts were created using her identity.
How Harris had manipulated the company’s financial system.
And finally, how Adrian Cross had financed the operation.
Cross’s attorneys tried to break her credibility.
“You’re emotionally involved, aren’t you?”
“Yes.”
“You love Daniel Brooks?”
“Yes.”
“You want to save his company?”
“Yes.”
“So you’re biased.”
Lily looked at the jury.
“Of course I am.”
The attorney smiled.
“Then why should anyone believe you?”
Lily paused.
“Because the numbers don’t care who I love.”
The courtroom became silent.
She continued.
“You can dislike me. You can doubt me. But you can’t argue with bank records.”
The jury listened.
Cross looked increasingly nervous.
Then Daniel took the stand.
He told them about the night he found Lily.
He described the sandwich.
The stuffed rabbit.
The little girl who thought every kindness came with a price.
His voice broke.
“I didn’t adopt her because I thought she would save me someday.”
He looked toward Lily.
“I adopted her because she needed somebody.”
Lily cried silently.
Daniel continued.
“And if you ask me whether I would do it again knowing what happened…”
He smiled.
“I would.”
The courtroom remained quiet.
After closing arguments, the jury deliberated.
Two hours later, they returned.
Guilty.
Adrian Cross’s empire collapsed within months.
His assets were seized.
His associates were prosecuted.
Harris received a long prison sentence.
The charges against Daniel were dismissed.
Brooks Development survived.
But Daniel didn’t care about the company.
When he walked outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.
“Mr. Brooks!”
“Are you going to rebuild?”
“Will Lily take a position in the company?”
Daniel ignored the questions.
He walked toward Lily.
She stood beneath the courthouse steps.
He hugged her.
“You saved us.”
She shook her head.
“You saved me first.”
“No.”
Daniel smiled through tears.
“I gave you a house.”
He touched her shoulder.
“You gave us a family.”
Lily hugged him tighter.
For a moment, they were no longer billionaire and financial expert.
They were simply a father and daughter who had survived something terrible.
But the story wasn’t finished.
Because Daniel had one final surprise for Lily.
