The Single Dad Adopted a Homeless Girl—15 Years Later She Walked Into Court and Saved His Empire
Chapter 6
Lily stared at the document for several minutes.
“Why me?”
The answer was hidden beneath the signature.
A small code.
She recognized it immediately.
Michael had used it when she was a teenager.
Daniel had taught her that code.
A way of marking documents that required physical verification.
Lily called the bank.
They confirmed the document was authentic.
But there was more.
The transaction record referenced a storage facility.
Locker 814.
Lily drove there with Daniel’s attorney.
Inside the locker was a metal box.
The lock opened with Michael’s code.
Lily lifted the lid.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
A flash drive.
And a letter addressed to Daniel.
She handed it to him.
Daniel opened it.
Michael’s handwriting filled the page.
Daniel,
If you’re reading this, someone finally succeeded in making you look guilty.
Daniel’s hands trembled.
I discovered that Adrian Cross has been purchasing influence inside your company for years. But Cross isn’t the person giving the orders.
Daniel looked at Lily.
She read over his shoulder.
The next line changed everything.
The person controlling the operation is someone you trust.
Daniel stopped.
“Who?”
The letter didn’t say.
Instead, it described a system.
Money was moved through Northstar.
Northstar paid consulting firms.
Those firms paid members of the board.
And someone inside Brooks Development altered records to make Daniel appear responsible.
Lily picked up the flash drive.
“This could prove everything.”
Daniel nodded.
“Then we’re going to court tomorrow.”
They spent the night copying files.
At 3 a.m., Lily discovered a hidden folder.
She opened it.
There was a video.
Michael appeared on screen.
He looked exhausted.
“Daniel, if you ever see this, I didn’t die by accident.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Michael continued.
“Cross knows about the transfers. But he’s not alone.”
A pause.
Then Michael whispered a name.
Daniel’s face drained of color.
Lily stared at him.
“Who is it?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Dad?”
He closed the laptop.
“Tomorrow.”
“No.”
“Lily.”
“You can’t protect me from this by hiding it.”
Daniel looked at her.
“The person Michael named is someone who has been in this family for years.”
“Who?”
Daniel finally spoke.
“My chief financial officer.”
Lily froze.
“Mr. Harris?”
“Yes.”
“But he helped us.”
“He helped himself.”
The next morning, they arrived at court.
Harris was already there.
He smiled at Lily.
“You look tired.”
She stared at him.
“You should be worried.”
His smile disappeared.
Daniel walked past.
Lily held the evidence folder against her chest.
For the first time since this began, she wasn’t afraid.
She knew exactly what had to happen.
But she didn’t know one thing.
Harris had already prepared a final move.
And it involved Lily’s adoption papers.
