The Single Dad Adopted a Homeless Girl—15 Years Later She Walked Into Court and Saved His Empire
Chapter 5
The attack came two nights later.
Lily was leaving her office when a black SUV followed her.
She noticed it at the second intersection.
She accelerated.
The SUV accelerated too.
She turned into a parking garage.
The SUV followed.
Lily abandoned her car and ran toward the elevator.
A man shouted behind her.
She pressed the button repeatedly.
The doors opened.
She jumped inside.
The man reached the elevator just as the doors closed.
Lily leaned against the wall, breathing hard.
Her phone rang.
Daniel.
“Where are you?”
“I’m okay.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
She hesitated.
“Someone followed me.”
Daniel went silent.
“Get to a safe place.”
“Dad—”
“Now.”
She drove to the Brooks estate.
Daniel was waiting outside.
He hugged her before saying anything.
“You’re not going anywhere alone.”
“I can handle myself.”
“I know.”
“Then why—”
“Because I almost lost you once.”
Lily looked at him.
“When?”
“The day I found you.”
She smiled sadly.
“I was already lost.”
“No.”
Daniel touched her shoulder.
“You were waiting for somebody to find you.”
That night, Lily finally told him what she had discovered.
The money transfers weren’t random.
They all connected to contracts signed between Brooks Development and a private investment group.
The group was controlled by one person.
Adrian Cross.
Daniel’s most powerful competitor.
A billionaire who had spent years trying to acquire Brooks Development.
Daniel slammed the file down.
“Cross.”
“Yes.”
“He couldn’t have done this alone.”
“I know.”
“Who helped him?”
Lily pointed to the old photograph.
“Michael Grant.”
Daniel stared.
“But Michael died.”
“His death was ruled accidental.”
“Lily…”
“I don’t think it was.”
She showed him a scanned newspaper article.
Michael’s car had gone off a bridge.
No witnesses.
No mechanical failure.
No note.
But Lily had found one strange detail.
Three days before his death, Michael had withdrawn $400,000 from an account connected to Northstar Holdings.
Daniel sat down.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He was trying to expose them.”
“And somebody stopped him.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Where did you get all this?”
She smiled faintly.
“I’ve spent fifteen years learning how people hide money.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You were supposed to be living your life.”
“I am.”
She closed the folder.
“This is my life too.”
The following morning, Daniel’s lawyers received a court notice.
Adrian Cross was suing for control of Brooks Development.
The hearing was scheduled for Friday.
If Cross won, Daniel would lose everything.
But on Thursday evening, Lily discovered something that changed the case completely.
An original transaction record had appeared in an abandoned bank archive.
It contained one signature.
Michael Grant’s.
And beside it was a handwritten instruction:
If Daniel ever comes under attack, give this to Lily.
