The original Horizon facility was hidden beneath an abandoned manufacturing plant in Wisconsin.
Thomas had chosen it because nobody had used the property in fifteen years.
The federal team arrived after midnight.
Daniel, Olivia, and Emily entered through a maintenance tunnel.
They moved quietly.
The facility was enormous.
Machines hummed beneath the concrete floor.
Olivia could feel the vibration through her shoes.
Emily pointed.
“The neural core is below us.”
“Where’s Noah?”
“Control room.”
They reached a steel door.
Voices came from inside.
Thomas.
And Noah.
Olivia’s heart raced.
She opened the door.
“NOAH!”
Her son looked up.
“Mom!”
Thomas stood beside him.
A weapon was pointed toward the ceiling.
“Stay where you are.”
Olivia stopped.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Let him go.”
Thomas smiled.
“After you activate Horizon.”
“No.”
“Then your son stays.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I’ll do it.”
Thomas looked at her.
“Of course you will.”
She walked toward the control panel.
Olivia whispered:
“What are you doing?”
“Trust me.”
Emily entered a code.
The machines activated.
The room shook.
Thomas smiled.
“Finally.”
But Olivia noticed something.
Emily wasn’t activating Horizon.
She was changing the system.
Olivia watched her hands.
She understood.
Emily was rewriting the emergency protocol.
Thomas didn’t notice.
He was too focused on the main screen.
“Thirty seconds,” Emily said.
Daniel whispered:
“What happens then?”
“The system locks itself.”
Thomas turned.
“What did you say?”
Emily smiled.
“You heard me.”
Thomas raised his weapon.
Emily pressed one final button.
Every machine stopped.
The lights went red.
Thomas screamed.

Thomas was tackled.
Noah ran into Olivia’s arms.
She held him tightly.
“My baby.”

Olivia cried.

He looked at Olivia.
“You think you’ve won?”
She looked at him.
“No.”
Thomas smiled.
“You don’t know what this technology can do.”
Olivia nodded.
“That’s why we’re shutting it down.”
Thomas laughed.
“You can’t.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I can.”
She held up a small device.
“The entire system is already corrupted.”
Thomas’s smile vanished.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
Emily looked at Olivia.
“She did.”
Olivia frowned.
“What?”
Emily smiled.
“When you pulled the emergency lever in Chicago, you created a system-wide failsafe.”
Olivia stared.
“You said it transmitted the database.”
“It did.”
“And?”
“It also gave me access.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“So Olivia accidentally shut down Horizon.”
Emily nodded.
“Every copy.”
Thomas went pale.
“No.”
Emily continued.
“Your servers are useless.”
Thomas lunged.
Agents restrained him.
For the first time, the powerful executive looked afraid.
Then Olivia noticed something.
Thomas wasn’t looking at the machines.
He was looking at Daniel.
“Your father knew,” Thomas whispered.
Daniel froze.
“Knew what?”
Thomas smiled.
“He knew Horizon would fail.”
“That’s why he shut it down.”
“No.”
Thomas laughed.
“He shut it down because he knew what it could become.”
Daniel stared.
Thomas leaned closer.
“He wasn’t trying to protect people.”
“What was he doing?”
“He was hiding the fact that he had already built it.”
Silence.
Emily looked at Daniel.
Thomas continued.
“Your father created the first successful neural machine.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Thomas smiled.
“And the prototype still exists.”
“Where?”
Thomas looked toward Olivia.
“Ask your mother.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“My mother is dead.”
