Single Mom Warned Him Three Times to Stop — 5 Seconds Later, She Shocked Everyone Watching

Chapter 5

The old Reed factory sat forty miles outside Chicago.

It had been closed for almost a decade.

Rust covered the gates.

Windows were broken.

Weeds grew through cracks in the concrete.

Daniel arrived with Olivia and two security officers.

Police had already secured the building.

Marcus Hale was inside.

Alive.

But unconscious.

He had been found beside a locked office containing dozens of boxes of old company records.

Olivia walked behind Daniel.

“Something doesn’t feel right.”

Daniel glanced at her.

“What?”

“Why would someone leave him here?”

“Maybe he escaped.”

“Then why didn’t he call the police?”

Daniel stopped.

“You’re right.”

They entered.

The air smelled like dust and oil.

A police officer approached.

“Mr. Reed.”

“Where’s Marcus?”

“Second floor.”

They climbed the stairs.

Marcus lay on the floor.

Paramedics were treating him.

He had a bruise on his temple.

Daniel knelt.

“Marcus.”

The older man opened his eyes.

“Daniel.”

“What happened?”

Marcus looked around.

“Who’s she?”

“My consultant.”

Marcus stared at Olivia.

Then whispered:

“Don’t trust him.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

Marcus tried to speak.

Then collapsed again.

Olivia looked around.

“Where are the records?”

The officer pointed.

“Office over there.”

Olivia entered.

The room was packed with boxes.

She opened one.

Old financial documents.

Another.

Employee records.

Another.

Blueprints.

Then she found a box marked:

PROJECT HORIZON.

Daniel froze.

“I haven’t seen that name in years.”

“What is it?”

“My father worked on it.”

Olivia opened the box.

Inside were technical plans for an automated manufacturing system.

Daniel looked stunned.

“This was supposed to be our next-generation platform.”

“What happened?”

“My father shut it down.”

“Why?”

“He said it wasn’t safe.”

Olivia examined the drawings.

Her eyes narrowed.

“This design is dangerous.”

Daniel looked at her.

“How?”

“The emergency systems rely on a single central processor.”

“So?”

“If the processor fails, everything fails.”

Daniel stared.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

She found another document.

A handwritten note.

PROJECT HORIZON MUST NEVER BE ACTIVATED.

Signed:

Robert Reed.

Daniel’s father.

Olivia looked at him.

“Why would your company resurrect this technology?”

Daniel shook his head.

“It wasn’t resurrected.”

She pointed toward the date on a recent engineering document.

“Someone updated it three months ago.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

Three months.

The same time Thomas Vance had threatened him.

Olivia continued searching.

She found invoices.

Payments.

Consulting contracts.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

Vance Strategic Consulting.

Daniel stepped backward.

“Thomas.”

Olivia nodded.

“He wasn’t just trying to destroy your company.”

“He was trying to get Horizon.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel stared at the plans.

“If he gets this technology, he could sell it.”

“And make billions.”

“But it’s unsafe.”

Olivia looked at him.

“Then why was your company preparing to launch it?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

They returned downstairs.

Marcus was awake.

Daniel approached him.

“Marcus, did Thomas force you to reactivate Horizon?”

Marcus looked frightened.

“I can’t talk.”

“You can.”

Marcus shook his head.

“He’ll kill my family.”

Daniel froze.

“Who?”

Marcus looked at Olivia.

Then Daniel.

“Not Thomas.”

“Then who?”

Marcus whispered:

“Someone above him.”

Before Daniel could ask more, the lights went out.

A loud explosion shook the building.

Glass shattered.

Police shouted.

Olivia grabbed Noah’s backpack instinctively.

Noah wasn’t there.

She froze.

Then remembered he was with Daniel’s security team outside.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Move!”

Smoke filled the hallway.

They ran toward the exit.

Behind them, flames climbed the old wooden staircase.

Someone had set the factory on fire.

As they reached the parking lot, Olivia turned.

She saw a figure standing inside an upper window.

Watching them.

The figure raised one hand.

Then disappeared into the smoke.

Daniel stared.

“Who was that?”

Olivia shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But Marcus did.

Because from the ambulance, he looked toward the burning factory and whispered:

“Daniel’s sister.”
