Single Dad Was Dared to Dance With the Cold CEO — Then She Whispered Something Unforgettable
Chapter 6
Daniel barely spoke on the drive home.
Victoria didn’t pressure him.
She knew what accusation felt like when it came without evidence.
The next morning, Daniel confronted her.
“Tell me about Laura.”
Victoria looked exhausted.
“What do you want to know?”
“Everything.”
She nodded.
“Three years ago, Laura approached my office.”
“Why?”
“She believed someone was stealing from the company.”
“She worked for you?”
“Briefly.”
“Then why did she stop?”
Victoria looked away.
“Because my father was still alive.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does your father have to do with it?”
“He discovered Laura was investigating Richard.”
“Why didn’t he help her?”
“He tried.”
“And?”
Victoria was silent.
“He told her to stop.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“Because he received a threat.”
“From Richard?”
“We never proved it.”
“What kind of threat?”
“A threat against me.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Victoria continued.
“My father was dying. He believed if he exposed the wrong person, I’d become the target.”
“So Laura stopped?”
“Yes.”
“Then she died.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Her car crash was never fully explained.”
Daniel stepped backward.
“You think Laura’s death was connected?”
“I’ve suspected it for three years.”
“And you never told me?”
“Because I had no proof.”
“Or because you were hiding something?”
Victoria accepted the accusation.
“Maybe both.”
Daniel looked hurt.
“I thought you were helping me.”
“I am.”
“Then stop protecting me from the truth.”
Victoria walked to her desk.
She opened a drawer.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel recognized Laura immediately.
She was standing beside Victoria’s father.
And another person.
Michael.
Daniel took the photograph.
“Why is my brother here?”
“I don’t know.”
“That is becoming a very convenient answer.”
Victoria didn’t respond.
Daniel left.
That night, Michael finally called.
His voice sounded terrified.
“Daniel.”
“Where are you?”
“Don’t ask.”
“Tell me what’s happening.”
“I tried to stop them.”
“Who?”
“The board.”
Daniel froze.
“What board?”
“They’ve been moving money through shell companies for years.”
“Richard?”
“Richard works for them.”
“Who runs them?”
Michael hesitated.
Then whispered,
“Someone you already know.”
“Who?”
The call ended.
Daniel immediately called back.
Nothing.
An hour later, police arrived at his house.
Michael’s car had been found abandoned.
Inside was blood.
Daniel felt like the floor had disappeared.
Victoria arrived twenty minutes later.
She didn’t ask permission.
She simply stood beside him.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why do you keep showing up?”
“Because you shouldn’t be alone.”
He almost laughed.
“You’re the most emotionally unavailable person I’ve ever met.”
Victoria looked at him.
“I know.”
“And yet you’re here.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her answer was quiet.
“Because I care about you.”
Daniel stared.
Neither spoke.
Then Victoria touched his hand.
“I’m sorry I didn’t say it sooner.”
Daniel looked at her.
The cold CEO had finally said something personal.
And it was the one thing he hadn’t expected.
