Single Dad Was Dared to Dance With the Cold CEO — Then She Whispered Something Unforgettable

Chapter 15

Two years later, Daniel still teased Victoria about the night she dared him to dance.

“You were arrogant.”

“I was the CEO.”

“You were terrifying.”

“I was trying to impress you.”

“You could have just said hello.”

“I did.”

“You said, ‘Dance with me.’”

“And you said yes.”

“Because everyone was watching.”

Victoria smiled.

“Liar.”

They stood on the balcony of their new home.

Below them, Emma was running through the yard with a puppy.

Daniel watched her.

“She looks happy.”

“She is.”

Victoria leaned against him.

“So are you.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You changed my life.”

“You changed mine first.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Before you, I thought love was another word for losing control.”

“And now?”

“Now I think it’s choosing someone and trusting them with the parts of you nobody else gets to see.”

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“That’s very un-CEO-like.”

“Don’t tell my board.”

He laughed.

Then Emma came running inside.

“Mom!”

Victoria turned immediately.

“What happened?”

“I need help.”

“With what?”

Emma held up a piece of paper.

“I have to write about the best moment of my life.”

Daniel smiled.

“What did you choose?”

Emma thought for a moment.

“The dance.”

Victoria laughed.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Emma looked between them.

“Because that’s when Dad met you.”

Daniel’s expression softened.

Victoria crouched beside her.

“Do you remember that night?”

Emma nodded.

“You told me once.”

“What did he tell you?”

Emma grinned.

“He said you whispered something important.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

He smiled.

“What did she whisper?”

Emma shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

Victoria laughed.

She leaned toward Emma.

“It was a warning.”

“A warning?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

Victoria glanced at Daniel.

“About someone standing behind us.”

Emma looked confused.

“That doesn’t sound romantic.”

“It wasn’t.”

Daniel laughed.

“Not at first.”

They all laughed.

Then Emma ran outside again.

Daniel wrapped an arm around Victoria.

“You know, when I look back, that dance feels like the beginning of everything.”

Victoria looked at him.

“It was.”

“You were going to protect me.”

“I was.”

“You were investigating my company.”

“I was.”

“You knew Laura.”

“I did.”

“You fell in love with me.”

“That happened too.”

“And I was just trying to survive.”

Victoria smiled.

“You still are.”

Daniel laughed.

“Maybe.”

He looked toward the yard.

“But now I have help.”

Victoria rested her head on his shoulder.

That was the truth.

He had started as a single father who thought he had no room left in his life for anything complicated.

Victoria had started as a cold CEO who believed needing someone was dangerous.

A ridiculous dare had put them on a dance floor.

A whispered warning had pulled them into a mystery.

A dead woman’s hidden truth had connected their lives.

And a company scandal had forced them to choose between fear and trust.

They chose trust.

They chose family.

They chose each other.

And every once in a while, at home, when the children were asleep and the house was quiet, Victoria would walk over to Daniel, take his hand, and whisper the same words that had started everything.

“Don’t be afraid.”

Daniel would smile.

“I’m not.”

Because this time, he knew who was standing beside him.

And he knew she wasn’t going anywhere.
