She Walked Away From Her Husband’s Affair Without a Fight — Then He Lost the Life He Took for Granted

Chapter 2

Daniel came home at 7:18 that evening.

Claire was sitting at the dining table.

The lights were low.

Sophie was at a friend’s house.

There were no distractions.

Daniel removed his coat slowly.

“You wanted to talk.”

Claire nodded.

“Sit down.”

He did.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Claire placed her phone on the table.

A screenshot appeared on the screen.

The message.

Daniel stared at it.

His shoulders dropped.

“You looked at my phone.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“I saw the notification.”

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Claire…”

“Who is she?”

He closed his eyes.

“Her name is Melissa.”

“How long?”

He swallowed.

“Six months.”

Claire stared at him.

Six months.

Half a year.

She thought about the mornings.

The family dinners.

Sophie asking whether her father could help with homework.

Christmas.

Her birthday.

All of it had happened while he was living another life.

“Does she know you’re married?”

“Yes.”

That answer hurt more than she expected.

“Does she know about Sophie?”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“How many times?”

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Many.”

Claire sat back.

“Did you love her?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Claire looked away.

“Okay.”

Daniel looked up.

“I never meant for this to happen.”

“That’s the sentence people always use.”

“I swear.”

“You didn’t accidentally have an affair, Daniel.”

He became defensive.

“It wasn’t that simple.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Please don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t try to make this complicated so you can feel less guilty.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I was unhappy.”

Claire looked at him.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You became distant. You didn’t communicate. You lied.”

Daniel looked down.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire nodded.

“Exactly.”

He reached for her hand.

She pulled it away.

“Don’t.”

His face tightened.

“What do you want?”

The question surprised her.

She had expected tears.

Excuses.

Promises.

Instead, he sounded almost relieved to be asked.

Claire answered:

“I want the truth about our finances.”

Daniel went silent.

“Why?”

“Because I found transfers I don’t recognize.”

He stared.

She already knew.

“How much?”

He looked away.

“Some business expenses.”

“From our investment account?”

“It’s complicated.”

“How much?”

He said nothing.

Claire opened a folder.

“Thirty-eight thousand dollars.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“It’s not gone.”

“Then where is it?”

“I put it into a new account.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

“I was thinking about starting something.”

“With her?”

“No.”

Claire studied him.

Maybe he wasn’t lying.

Or maybe he had simply learned how to lie better.

She stood.

“I need space.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you leaving?”

“Yes.”

His eyes widened.

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know yet.”

He stood too.

“Claire, please.”

She looked at him.

“I am not going to fight you for our marriage.”

“What?”

“I am not going to compete with another woman.”

His expression changed.

“That’s not what I want.”

“Maybe not.”

She picked up her bag.

“But you chose something.”

Daniel followed her into the hallway.

“Can we work through this?”

Claire stopped.

“Do you want to?”

He froze.

That pause told her everything.

She nodded.

“Then I already have my answer.”

She walked upstairs.

Daniel stood below.

A few minutes later, Claire packed a suitcase.

She didn’t take family photographs.

She didn’t take expensive jewelry.

She took clothes.

Important documents.

Her laptop.

And the small wooden box containing her father’s watch.

When she walked out, Daniel didn’t stop her.

He simply stood in the doorway.

Claire looked back once.

Not because she wanted to stay.

Because she was saying goodbye to the life she thought she had.
