She Walked Away From Her Husband’s Affair Without a Fight — Then He Lost the Life He Took for Granted
Chapter 10
The wedding preparations brought old memories back.
Claire found herself returning to questions she thought she’d already answered.
Was Michael really different?
Was she ready?
Was she marrying peace because she was afraid of intensity?
One night, she called Emily.
“I don’t know.”
Emily listened.
“About Michael?”
“Yes.”
“Do you love him?”
“Yes.”
“Do you trust him?”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you afraid of?”
Claire thought.
“That I don’t feel the same way I felt about Daniel.”
Emily smiled.
“Good.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“That kind of love nearly destroyed you.”
Claire laughed weakly.
Emily continued:
“You don’t need the same feeling.”
“What do I need?”
“Something better.”
Claire looked out the window.
“Peace.”
“Exactly.”
She hung up feeling calmer.
The wedding took place in a garden.
Small.
Beautiful.
Sophie stood beside her.
Michael waited at the front.
Daniel came.
He brought no plus-one.
He sat quietly with his mother.
When Claire walked down the aisle, he smiled.
Not a broken smile.
A grateful one.
After the ceremony, he approached.
“You look happy.”
“I am.”
“Good.”
Sophie hugged him.
“Dad.”
He hugged her.
“You look beautiful.”
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
Michael extended his hand.
Daniel shook it.
There was no tension.
No competition.
Just two men connected through one woman and one child.
Afterward, Claire and Michael danced.
Daniel watched briefly.
Then left.
He returned home alone.
For the first time, he wasn’t imagining another outcome.
He accepted the one life had given him.
He had lost Claire.
But he had not lost the opportunity to become a better man.
That mattered.
