She Thought Her Husband Was Just a Hardworking Dad — Until She Discovered the Fortune He Had Hidden From Her
Chapter 4
Nathan planned to tell Emma that weekend.
He had prepared everything.
The documents.
The family history.
The explanation.
Then something happened.
Emma’s ex-husband reappeared.
His name was Michael Carter.
He had been absent for six years.
Now he stood outside Emma’s office asking to see her.
She refused.
He called again.
Then again.
Finally, he sent a message.
I know your new husband is hiding money.
Emma froze.
How could Michael know?
She met him in a coffee shop because she wanted answers.
Michael looked older.
Tired.
Desperate.
“I heard Nathan Reed isn’t what he says.”
Emma stared.
“How do you know?”
“I have contacts.”
“What do you want?”
“Money.”
She almost laughed.
“You haven’t changed.”
Michael leaned forward.
“I’m serious.”
“About what?”
“Your husband.”
He placed a photograph on the table.
Nathan stood outside a private office building.
Behind him was the logo of a major investment firm.
Emma recognized the name.
Everyone did.
The firm managed billions.
“What is this?”
Michael smiled.
“He’s not a construction manager.”
Emma’s heart sank.
“What is he?”
“One of the owners.”
She stared at him.
Michael continued.
“He has access to more money than you can imagine.”
Emma pushed the photograph away.
“Why are you telling me?”
“I need a loan.”
She laughed.
“Of course.”
He grabbed her wrist.
“If you leave him, I can help you.”
She pulled away.
“Stay away from me.”
Michael stood.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No.”
Emma looked at him.
“I already made one when I married you.”
She walked away.
But she couldn’t stop thinking about the photograph.
That night, Nathan came home.
Emma was waiting.
“Tell me the truth.”
He stopped.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
He knew.
His face changed.
“Who told you?”
“Does it matter?”
Nathan sat down.
Emma remained standing.
“How much money do you have?”
Nathan looked at her.
“Enough to make you never work again.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
He took a breath.
“My net worth is around two hundred and eighty million.”
Emma didn’t speak.
Two hundred and eighty million.
She thought about the old kitchen.
The cheap car.
The modest house.
The supermarket coupons.
Her entire marriage looked different in an instant.
“Why?”
Nathan answered quietly:
“Because I wanted you to love me without knowing.”
