She Thought Her Husband Was Just a Hardworking Dad — Until She Discovered the Fortune He Had Hidden From Her
Chapter 2
Their first year of marriage was peaceful.
Emma and Nathan combined their families carefully.
They didn’t rush.
There were arguments over homework, bedtime, dishes, and which child had broken the remote.
There were also Saturday breakfasts.
Movie nights.
Trips to the public lake.
Christmas mornings filled with wrapping paper.
They weren’t wealthy, but they were happy.
Emma noticed one strange thing about Nathan.
He never worried about money.
Not because he spent extravagantly.
He actually spent very little.
But whenever an unexpected expense appeared, Nathan handled it calmly.
The refrigerator broke.
He paid for a new one.
Caleb needed braces.
Nathan covered the cost.
Lily developed a dental issue.
He quietly paid the bill.
Emma once asked:
“How do you always have money for emergencies?”
He smiled.
“I save.”
“That much?”
“I’m good at it.”
She laughed.
“You’re suspiciously responsible.”
He kissed her forehead.
“You married me anyway.”
She did.
Then Emma’s mother became ill.
The medical expenses increased.
Emma started taking extra shifts.
Nathan noticed.
“You don’t need to do that.”
“I want to help.”
“We can manage.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t want to depend entirely on you.”
He looked at her.
“You don’t.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Nathan smiled.
“It means we’re a team.”
She didn’t question it.
Nathan began working longer hours.
Sometimes he came home late.
Sometimes he left before dawn.
Emma assumed the construction company was demanding.
What she didn’t know was that Nathan’s day job was partly an act.
His real work happened through a private investment office that he had inherited from his father.
The construction company was one of dozens of businesses in which he quietly held controlling interests.
Nathan’s father had built an investment empire.
When he died, Nathan inherited it.
But Nathan didn’t want the public attention.
He had watched his father’s wealth destroy relationships.
He had seen relatives fight over money.
He had seen people smile differently when they learned his family was rich.
So Nathan made a decision.
Nobody would know.
Not his coworkers.
Not his neighbors.
Not the woman he eventually married.
He wanted to know whether someone would love Nathan Reed the man.
Not Nathan Reed the millionaire.
For a while, he thought he had succeeded.
Then life became more complicated.
One evening, Emma found an envelope on the kitchen counter.
It was from a private bank.
She didn’t open it.
She simply looked at Nathan.
“Why are you getting letters from banks with security seals?”
Nathan froze.
“Work.”
Emma smiled.
“Your construction company has very serious mail.”
He laughed.
“It does.”
She kissed him.
“You’re strange.”
He watched her walk away.
He felt guilty.
Because the secret he had kept for years wasn’t becoming easier to hide.
It was becoming harder.
