Margaret summoned Emma alone.

Emma arrived expecting questions.

Instead, Margaret handed her a folder.

Inside were financial documents.

Emma frowned.

“What is this?”

“Sterling Holdings.”

She looked through them.

“There are irregular transfers.”

Emma looked up.

“What?”

“Someone has been moving company money.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Margaret leaned closer.

“Alexander is in danger.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“From who?”

“Someone inside the company.”

Margaret explained that several executives had been diverting money through shell corporations.

Alexander had recently begun investigating.

But the evidence was incomplete.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because they know about you.”

Emma froze.

“Me?”

“They believe you’re Alexander’s weakness.”

Margaret’s voice softened.

“If they can’t hurt him directly, they’ll hurt you.”

Emma stared at the documents.

“Why don’t you tell Alexander?”

“I will.”

“Then why me?”

“Because I need to know whether you will run.”

Emma looked at her.

“No.”

Margaret smiled.

“I knew you wouldn’t.”

That evening, Emma confronted Alexander.

He admitted he was investigating the missing money.

“I didn’t tell you because I wanted to keep you safe.”

“You don’t get to decide that alone.”

“I know.”

“We’re supposed to be partners.”

Alexander smiled.

“Real partners?”

Emma nodded.

“Real.”

He kissed her forehead.

Then the lights went out.

The apartment became completely dark.

A crash came from downstairs.

Alexander immediately grabbed Emma’s hand.

“Stay behind me.”

A security alarm sounded.

Someone had entered the building.

The police arrived minutes later.

Nobody was found.

But on the kitchen table was a message.

BREAK OFF THE ENGAGEMENT.

Emma stared at it.

Alexander’s face hardened.

The fake relationship had become real.

And now someone was willing to hurt them because of it.
