Paralyzed Millionaire Was Abandoned at the Altar — Then He Looked at the Maid and Said…

Chapter 4

Grace resigned the next morning.

Ethan was furious.

Not because she left.

Because she didn’t tell him why.

He found her packing cleaning supplies.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

“Why?”

She kept her eyes down.

“Because this can’t happen.”

“What can’t?”

“This.”

She gestured between them.

Ethan moved his wheelchair closer.

“You don’t get to decide what I feel.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me what you’re feeling.”

Grace swallowed.

“I love you.”

Silence.

Ethan’s heart stopped.

She continued.

“And that’s exactly why I have to leave.”

He stared.

“Why?”

“Because you deserve someone who can stand beside you without everyone saying she wants your money.”

He frowned.

“I don’t care what people say.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because I heard them at the hospital.”

“What did they say?”

“That the maid caught herself a billionaire.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

“People.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Grace stepped closer.

“Ethan, I’m not doing this because I’m ashamed of you.”

“Then what?”

“I’m ashamed of how people will always look at me.”

He reached for her hand.

She stepped back.

That hurt.

More than he expected.

“Grace.”

“I need to go.”

She turned.

“Wait.”

She stopped.

Ethan looked at her.

“Give me one reason.”

She hesitated.

“You don’t need me.”

He stared at her.

“What?”

“You have money.”

“You think this is about money?”

“No.”

“Then what is it?”

She whispered:

“Power.”

He went quiet.

“You’re my employee.”

“Yes.”

“You think I can’t love you without controlling you.”

“Yes.”

The accusation cut deep.

Ethan shook his head.

“I would never.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you leaving?”

“Because I don’t trust the world around you.”

She walked away.

Ethan sat alone.

For the first time since the accident, he felt helpless.

Not because of his legs.

Because he couldn’t force someone to believe him.

Three days later, Grace was gone.

She moved into a small apartment across town.

She worked at a local restaurant.

Noah continued treatment.

Ethan returned to his routine.

But everything felt empty.

One evening, his sister Sophie found him in the library.

“You love her.”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Sophie smiled.

“You do.”

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

“Tell her.”

“She doesn’t want me.”

“That’s not what she said.”

“She left.”

“She was scared.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Of me?”

“Of what being with you means.”

He sighed.

“How do I fix that?”

“You don’t.”

“What?”

“You let her choose.”

Ethan looked toward the window.

His grandfather had once told him:

“A man who loves someone doesn’t build a cage around them. He builds a door and lets them decide whether to walk through.”

Ethan had always thought it was a strange saying.

Now it made sense.

He decided he would give Grace space.

Not weeks.

Not months.

As long as she needed.

Then, one night, something arrived at his office.

A file.

Anonymous.

Inside was a photograph of Grace.

Taken outside her apartment.

The note beneath it contained six words:

She’s not who you think she is.
