My Father-In-Law Gave Me A 40-Page File And 3 Days To Resign — Then I Checked The Letterhead…
Chapter 9
Daniel and Claire returned to the city with Richard’s evidence.
They didn’t go home.
They went straight to an independent lawyer.
Her name was Evelyn Cross.
She specialized in corporate fraud.
After three hours of reviewing the files, Evelyn gave them a single answer.
“Victor has been building this case for years.”
“Can we stop him?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Prove the original ownership.”
Daniel placed the Harrison Trust documents on the table.
“What if the controlling shares are still there?”
Evelyn looked up.
“Then Victor has a serious problem.”
Claire asked,
“Why?”
“Because if your mother legally created the trust before Victor’s fraudulent transfers, he never owned the shares.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then we expose him.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust has a condition.”
“What?”
“It activates only when both family heirs are present.”
Daniel and Claire looked at one another.
“Both?”
“Brooks and Harrison.”
Daniel understood.
His father had named him.
Claire was the Harrison heir.
Together, they controlled the trust.
Evelyn continued.
“You need to activate it before Victor knows.”
They arranged the documents.
But there was a problem.
Claire’s signature was required.
So was Daniel’s.
They signed.
The trust opened.
Inside was a single encrypted drive.
They opened it.
A video appeared.
Susan Harrison.
Claire’s mother.
She looked directly at the camera.
“My daughter.”
Claire began crying.
“If you are seeing this, the men who threatened us have failed.”
Susan explained that she had hidden the controlling shares.
Not in a bank.
Not in property.
Inside Hale Industries itself.
“Your father knows where.”
Claire looked at Richard.
He nodded.
Susan continued.
“The shares are stored inside the original company vault.”
Daniel asked,
“Where is it?”
Richard gave them the address.
The oldest Hale Industries building.
They went there that night.
The vault was hidden below the basement.
Richard used an old key.
The door opened.
Inside was a metal case.
Daniel expected stock certificates.
Instead, there was a book.
A handwritten ledger.
And one letter.
The ledger contained names of every investor.
Every transfer.
Every bribe.
The final page listed Victor’s involvement.
Claire stared.
“We have him.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“What do you mean?”
“Evidence isn’t enough if he destroys the company first.”
Daniel looked at the dates.
Victor had scheduled a special board meeting.
The next morning.
He intended to remove Richard.
Replace the board.
Then force Claire to sign the final transfer.
Daniel closed the ledger.
“We need to get there first.”
They arrived before sunrise.
Victor was already inside.
The boardroom was full.
Richard entered.
Victor stood.
“You’re late.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
“I just wanted everyone here.”
Daniel and Claire walked in behind him.
Victor’s expression changed.
“You.”
Daniel placed the ledger on the table.
Victor stared.
“Where did you get that?”
Daniel answered,
“From my father.”
Victor’s face went cold.
“Your father is dead.”
“Yes.”
“But he left me something.”
Victor’s hands tightened.
“What?”
Daniel leaned closer.
“A reason to stop running.”
