The coordinates led to an old fishing village.
A small house stood above the cliffs.
Daniel knocked.
No answer.
He opened the door.
Inside were photographs.
Thomas.
Susan.
Richard.
All three together.
Daniel felt tears rise.
Then a voice came from the back room.
“Daniel.”
He turned.
The man standing there was older.
Gray-haired.
Thin.
But alive.
His father.
Daniel couldn’t move.
Thomas stepped forward.
“I am sorry.”
Daniel whispered,
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor wasn’t the only threat.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who else?”
Thomas looked toward Claire.
“Her uncle.”
“Jonathan.”
“Yes.”
“I thought he was arrested.”
“He was.”
Thomas shook his head.
“But people like him build systems that survive them.”
Daniel felt overwhelmed.
“Why didn’t you come back?”
“Because I couldn’t risk you.”
“You had a son.”
“I know.”
Thomas looked at him with tears.
“Every day I stayed away, I wondered if I was doing the right thing.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You weren’t.”
Thomas nodded.
“I know.”
They hugged.
For a moment, twenty years disappeared.
Daniel was a child again.
His father was holding him.
Then Claire entered.
Thomas looked at her.
“Your mother would be proud.”
Claire smiled through tears.
“She’s alive.”
Thomas smiled.
“I know.”
Daniel froze.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“You all knew.”
Thomas laughed softly.
“Families.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You people are impossible.”
Thomas smiled.
“Probably.”
He handed Daniel a small envelope.
Inside was a letter.

Thomas continued.

He smiled.
