My Father-In-Law Gave Me A 40-Page File And 3 Days To Resign — Then I Checked The Letterhead…
Chapter 8
Richard explained everything.
The three-day deadline wasn’t arbitrary.
Years earlier, the Hale family had signed a succession agreement.
If Richard resigned or became medically unfit, Claire would become acting chairman.
But there was a hidden clause.
Any unresolved legal investigation involving the chairman’s immediate family could trigger a transfer of voting control to a third-party trustee.
Victor had arranged that trustee years ago.
“If Daniel resigns,” Richard said, “the investigation becomes public.”
“Then you become unable to serve.”
“Claire takes over.”
“And the trustee takes control.”
Daniel understood.
“Victor.”
Richard nodded.
“He would control the trustee.”
Claire stared.
“So you wanted Daniel to disappear from the company.”
“Yes.”
“To keep Victor from using the clause.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You could have told us.”
Richard’s eyes filled.
“I tried.”
“But?”
“Every conversation was being monitored.”
He pointed toward the ceiling.
“Victor has people everywhere.”
Daniel looked at the letter.
“What does my father mean by ‘trust the person who gave you three days’?”
Richard smiled sadly.
“He knew I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Of making the wrong choice.”
Richard sat down.
“When I realized Victor had infiltrated the company, I knew I could not fight him openly.”
“So I made the only move left.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“I made you the target.”
Daniel stared.
“You used me as bait.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor believed you were expendable.”
Richard leaned forward.
“That was the only reason he didn’t kill you immediately.”
Claire looked horrified.
“You risked his life.”
Richard nodded.
“I did.”
Daniel was furious.
But beneath the anger was something else.
His father-in-law had put him in danger.
He had also saved him.
Both could be true.
Richard opened another folder.
“These are Victor’s real accounts.”
Daniel scanned them.
Millions.
Payments.
Bribes.
Political donations.
Property acquisitions.
Then one line caught his eye.
Harrison Trust — Final Transfer
“What’s this?”
Richard’s expression changed.
“That is what Victor wants.”
“What is the Harrison Trust?”
Richard looked at Claire.
“Your mother created it.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“To protect the original ownership of Hale Industries.”
Daniel frowned.
“Original ownership?”
Richard nodded.
“Your mother and my family founded the company together.”
“The company was supposed to belong to both families.”
“Victor slowly bought control through fraud.”
“Your mother discovered it.”
“Thomas helped her.”
“They were going to expose him.”
“And Victor killed them.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
Daniel looked up.
“Your mother escaped.”
“Thomas escaped.”
“Both lived in hiding.”
“Until Victor found them.”
Claire began to cry.
“What did my mother hide in the trust?”
Richard’s answer was quiet.
“The controlling shares.”
Silence.
“If Victor gets the Harrison Trust,” Richard said, “he owns the company.”
Daniel understood.
“This was never about me.”
“No.”
“It was about the company.”
Richard shook his head.
“Not entirely.”
He looked at Claire.
“Victor wants Claire too.”
“What?”
“He wants her to sign the final transfer voluntarily.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And how does he plan to force her?”
Richard looked at him.
“By making her believe Daniel is guilty.”
The forty-page file was the first step.
Daniel looked at the papers.
Everything was finally connecting.
The fake investigation.
The old letterhead.
The three-day deadline.
The hidden trust.
The missing fathers.
The family secrets.
And somewhere inside Hale Industries…
Victor was still waiting.
