Claire refused to believe it.
“My father didn’t betray him.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
The photograph was clear.
Richard had been circled.
But the ledger contained more.
One column documented payments.
Another listed meetings.
Richard’s name appeared repeatedly.
So did Victor’s.
But Daniel noticed something.
Every payment connected to Richard ended before the payments connected to Victor began.
He pointed.
“Look.”
Claire leaned closer.
“The money stopped.”
“Exactly.”
“When?”
“The week before my father died.”
Claire looked at him.
“Then Richard may have been trying to get out.”
Daniel nodded.
The ledger contained one final account.
A number.
Not a name.
R-41.
Daniel searched the old company system.
Nothing.
Claire called the current chief financial officer.
Jonathan Pierce.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“Where are you?”
“Home.”
“Can you access the old corporate trust records?”
A pause.
“Why?”
“Because I need them.”
“Not tonight.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
“I’ll send them tomorrow.”
Claire hung up.
Daniel looked at her.
“He knows.”
“Yes.”
“Too quickly.”
She nodded.
They went to the office.
The building was almost empty.
Daniel used an old facilities key to enter the executive archive.
Claire followed.
They searched the old trust records.
Nothing.
Then Daniel found an inactive entity.
R-41 Holdings.
Owner:
Richard Hale.
Beneficiary:
Daniel Brooks.
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Claire looked at the screen.
“My father named you?”
“Apparently.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
The trust held no money.
Only one asset.
A warehouse.
They found the address.
It was outside the city.
They drove there.
The warehouse looked abandoned.
Inside, however, the security system was active.
Daniel found a keypad.
R-41.
The door opened.
There were boxes stacked floor to ceiling.
Old company records.
Family files.
Photographs.
And a single computer.
The screen was already on.
A video began playing.
Richard appeared.
Older.
Exhausted.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel.”
Daniel froze.
“If you’re watching this, you have found the ledger.”
Claire started crying.
Her father continued.
“I gave you the forty-page file because I knew you would question it.”
He paused.
“That is why I chose you.”
Daniel stared.
“Not because you’re my son-in-law.”
“Because Thomas trusted you.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Richard’s voice shook.
“I was unable to save your father.”
“I failed him.”
“But I did not betray him.”
He looked away.
“Victor did.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
Richard continued.
“Victor is still inside Hale Industries.”
“He controls people.”
“He controls records.”
“He controls the board.”
“Your resignation is the final step of his plan.”
Claire whispered,
“What plan?”
The video answered.
“Once Daniel resigns, Victor will accuse him publicly.”
“He will use the fabricated records.”
“Then he will force Claire to assume control of the company.”
“Once she controls it, he will control her.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
Richard continued.
“Because Victor needs one thing.”
“The Harrison Trust.”
The screen went black.
Daniel stood still.
“What is the Harrison Trust?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then the computer displayed one final message.
OPEN FILE 17.
Daniel clicked.
A photograph appeared.
His father.
Alive.
Taken six years after his supposed death.
Daniel’s knees nearly gave out.
“He was alive.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“So was my mother.”
Both families had believed they had lost their loved ones.
But someone had kept them alive.
And perhaps the people they thought were dead…
were still connected to the company.
