Ethan sat alone in his office reading the report.
His hands shook.
He had spent five years believing Olivia was the greatest mistake of his life.
Now he realized the greatest loss had been five years with his own child.
That evening, he visited Olivia.
Noah was building blocks on the floor.
Ethan sat nearby.
“Can I help?”
Noah nodded.
They built a tower.
It fell.
Noah laughed.
Ethan laughed too.
Olivia watched from the kitchen.
It was the first time in years she had seen Ethan genuinely happy.
But happiness wasn’t enough.
“You still haven’t told me what happened.”
She looked at him.
“I did.”
“You said my mother threatened you.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come back when she couldn’t reach you?”
Olivia looked down.
“Because by then, I didn’t know if you would believe me.”
Ethan closed his eyes.

Before he left, Noah suddenly asked:
“Are you coming back tomorrow?”
Ethan looked at him.
“Yes.”
Noah smiled.
