Sophia’s life had taken a different direction.
She joined a large consulting company after graduation.
The salary was good.
The office was beautiful.
Her friends were still there.
They moved into management positions.
They traveled.
They posted photographs from expensive restaurants.
Sophia followed the same path.

She remembered Daniel.
Not romantically.
At least that’s what she told herself.
She remembered his words.
“People deciding what I’m worth before they know me.”
Five years after graduation, Sophia was promoted to senior strategy manager.
Her company had recently acquired a growing technology firm.
Her boss called her into his office.
“You’ll be leading the integration team.”
Sophia smiled.
“What company?”
Her boss handed her a folder.
“Reed Systems.”
She froze.
“Reed?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel Reed?”
“I believe so.”
Sophia opened the file.
There was a photograph.
Daniel.
Older.
Confident.
Wearing a tailored suit.
She stared.
“That can’t be him.”
Her boss laughed.
“You know him?”
“We went to college together.”
“Good. That should make things easier.”
Sophia closed the folder.
She didn’t tell him about the torn jacket.
She didn’t tell him about the party.
She didn’t tell him how her friends had laughed.
Because something uncomfortable had begun to settle in her stomach.
The next morning, her boss gave her one more instruction.
“The founder wants to meet the integration team personally.”
Sophia swallowed.
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
