Five years after the day Daniel had walked into college wearing his torn jacket, the university invited him back.
He was the keynote speaker at graduation.
Sophia sat in the front row.
Daniel stood on stage.
Hundreds of students watched him.
He didn’t talk about becoming rich.
He talked about being underestimated.
But he warned them against making the same mistake in reverse.
“Don’t measure people by what they own,” he said.
“And don’t measure yourself by what you don’t own yet.”
The room became quiet.
“I once wore a jacket with a torn sleeve to this university.”
A few students laughed.
Daniel smiled.
“I remember being embarrassed.”
He looked toward Sophia.
“But embarrassment taught me something.”
He paused.
“People’s opinions can hurt you.”
“But they don’t have to define you.”
After the ceremony, Sophia approached him.
“You didn’t have to mention the jacket.”
“I wanted to.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s part of my story.”
She smiled.
“Not theirs?”
“No.”
“Good.”
They walked across campus.
Daniel stopped outside the old lecture hall.
“This is where it happened.”
Sophia looked at him.
“I remember.”
“So do I.”
She reached into her bag.
She had brought something.
An old photograph.
Daniel at twenty-three.
Wearing the torn jacket.
She handed it to him.
“Where did you get this?”
“Megan.”
Daniel laughed.
“She kept it?”
“Apparently.”
He studied the picture.
Then smiled.
“I look exhausted.”
“You were.”
“You were cruel.”
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“But you’re not that person anymore.”
“Neither are you.”
They walked on.
