Her Mother Forced Her to Marry a Stranger… But Her “Poor” Husband Hid a Shocking Secret
Chapter 11
Eleanor came to live with them the following spring.
She carried years of guilt.
One evening, she sat beside Clara near the garden.
“I should have told you everything.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“I know.”
“I forced you to marry him.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“Do you regret it?”
Clara looked across the garden.
Samuel was teaching a group of children how to plant vegetables.
“No.”
Her mother sighed with relief.
“I was afraid you would.”
Clara took her hand.
“I regret that you were so frightened you couldn’t trust me with the truth.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I understand.”
Their relationship slowly healed.
Not perfectly.
But honestly.
Beatrice, Clara’s childhood friend, also began visiting the estate.
She had once envied Clara.
Now she admired her.
One afternoon, she asked:
“Was Samuel really pretending to be poor?”
Clara laughed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To find out who would love him without the fortune.”
Beatrice looked thoughtful.
“And you did.”
“No.”
Clara smiled.
“I loved him before I knew the fortune existed.”
That sentence became famous among the servants.
Years later, when people asked how Clara had become so wealthy, she always gave the same answer.
“I didn’t.”
They looked confused.
“My father left money,” she continued. “My husband inherited money. But wealth isn’t something you become. It is something you are responsible for.”
