Her Mother Forced Her to Marry a Stranger… But Her “Poor” Husband Hid a Shocking Secret

Chapter 10

Samuel sold several properties.

Clara sold none.

Instead, they used the restored trust according to Edmund’s original wishes.

Farmers received land.

Widows received pensions.

Workers injured in the trading houses received compensation.

A school was built.

A small hospital followed.

The old warehouse became a legal office where poor families could receive help without payment.

Clara became deeply involved.

She learned the accounts.

She reviewed contracts.

She listened to people who had once been afraid to speak.

Samuel continued working the land.

He refused to abandon the farmhouse.

One morning Clara found him repairing a fence.

“You own half the county.”

“Not half.”

“Nearly.”

“And?”

“And you’re repairing a fence.”

“It still needs repairing.”

She smiled.

“You could hire someone.”

“I could.”

“But you won’t.”

“No.”

She watched him.

“You really were poor once, weren’t you?”

Samuel nodded.

“I was.”

“What happened?”

“My family lost everything.”

“And you rebuilt it.”

“Slowly.”

Clara sat beside him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I wanted you to know me before you knew the name.”

She looked at him.

“That may have been the first honest thing you’ve ever done.”

Samuel smiled.

“I thought marrying you without telling you I was wealthy was dishonest.”

“It was.”

“I apologize.”

She leaned closer.

“But you gave me something no fortune could buy.”

“What?”

“A husband who listened.”

Samuel looked at her.

“I loved you before you knew what I owned.”

Clara’s eyes softened.

“And I loved you when I thought you owned nothing.”

Neither spoke.

The wind moved through the grass.

The old farmhouse stood behind them.

It was still small.

Still plain.

Still home.
