Her Mother Forced Her to Marry a Stranger… But Her “Poor” Husband Hid a Shocking Secret

Chapter 4

Over the following weeks, Clara began to notice things she had previously ignored.

Samuel knew the names of merchants from distant ports.

He could read legal documents written in French.

He knew how grain prices changed from county to county.

He recognized the seals of wealthy families.

Once, a traveling merchant arrived at the farmhouse.

The man looked at Samuel.

Then immediately lowered his head.

“My lord.”

Clara nearly dropped the cup in her hand.

Samuel’s expression became cold.

“Do not call me that here.”

The merchant bowed.

“Yes, sir.”

After he left, Clara confronted Samuel.

“You told me you were a farmer.”

“I work the land.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Samuel sighed.

“My family once owned considerable property.”

“How considerable?”

He avoided her eyes.

“Enough.”

“Enough for what?”

“To make enemies.”

She stared at him.

“Are you secretly wealthy?”

“No.”

“Samuel.”

“I am not the owner of the fortune.”

“Then who is?”

He looked at her.

“You.”

Clara laughed once.

It was not amusement.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to read the documents.”

That night, Samuel showed her a sealed inheritance agreement.

Her father’s name.

Her mother’s name.

And Clara’s.

If Edmund Whitmore died before the trust was secured, Clara would become its legal beneficiary upon reaching twenty-one.

She had already passed that age.

The trust should have been hers for years.

Instead, the money had been diverted.

Clara felt betrayed.

“My mother knew.”

“Yes.”

“She sent me here because of this.”

“Yes.”

“She knew you were protecting me.”

“Yes.”

Clara sat down.

“What else haven’t you told me?”

Samuel remained silent.

“That means there is more.”

“There always is.”

He finally confessed that he had spent seven years tracing the stolen assets.

He had lived as a poor farmer deliberately.

He had allowed wealthy men to believe he had abandoned his family’s fortune.

Meanwhile, he had bought land under false names, placed money in distant trading houses, and quietly gathered evidence.

Clara looked at him differently.

“You aren’t poor.”

“No.”

“Then what are you?”

Samuel hesitated.

“The last surviving heir of the Hale estate.”

Clara stared.

The Hale estate had once been one of the largest private fortunes in the colonies.

Everyone believed its inheritance had disappeared after a dispute years earlier.

“You are Samuel Hale?”

“Yes.”

“The Samuel Hale?”

He nodded.

Clara stood.

“You let me marry you believing you were a poor farmer.”

“You were sent here because your life was in danger.”

“And you never thought I deserved to know?”

“I thought you deserved to live.”

She looked away.

For the first time, she understood that the quiet man beside her was not what he appeared to be.

But she still didn’t know the most dangerous secret.

Samuel had discovered who ordered her father’s death.

And that person was closer to Clara than she could imagine.
