Daniel’s divorce made it easier.
“Why send me the photograph?”
Her mother answered:
“To make you panic.”
“And the break-in?”
“To make you feel watched.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Then Charlotte…”
“Was probably being used.”
Evelyn looked at the financial records.
“Maybe.”
Her mother nodded.
“Richard uses people.”
“Like me?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn felt angry.
But not at her mother.
At everyone.
Her entire family had been built around secrets.
That evening, they returned to the hotel.
Daniel sat by the window.
“You deserve the truth.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Then tell me.”
He took a breath.
“I married you because I loved you.”
She waited.
“But I also loved what I thought our life could become.”
“Meaning?”
“Money.”
Evelyn nodded.
He continued.
“When Charlotte appeared, she made me feel successful.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You don’t.”
“I chose status over you.”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were ordinary.”
“You were wrong.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn sat down.
“Why did you sign the divorce?”
“Because I thought you couldn’t give me what I wanted.”
“And now?”
“I know you could give me everything.”
She shook her head.
“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”
Daniel looked hurt.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want someone to stay because I can give them everything.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
Evelyn looked away.
“You need to prove it.”
“How?”
“Live without me.”
He swallowed.
“For how long?”
“As long as it takes.”
Before he could answer, a man entered.
Family security.
“Miss Carter.”
“Yes?”
“We found the source of the messages.”
“Who?”
“Richard.”
Evelyn froze.
“What does he want?”
The security officer handed her a file.
Inside was a legal notice.
The Carter family trust was being challenged.
The plaintiff:
Richard Carter.
Claim:
Evelyn was an unfit beneficiary.
The reason?
Her divorce.
The document alleged she had concealed family assets from her spouse and used them to influence the marriage.
Evelyn stared.
“That isn’t true.”
“No.”
“But he doesn’t need it to be.”
Her mother nodded.
“He needs the court to believe it long enough to freeze the trust.”
Daniel looked at the papers.
“What happens if it’s frozen?”
Evelyn answered:
“I lose control.”
“How much?”
“Everything.”
Daniel looked at her.

“Then we fight.”
She frowned.
“We?”

Evelyn shook her head.
“You didn’t create Richard.”
“No.”
“But I can help stop him.”
She looked at him.
