He Signed The Divorce Mocking Her, Unaware She’s A Secret Trillionaire Heiress
Chapter 4
Daniel couldn’t speak for several seconds.
The room felt too quiet.
Charlotte was staring at Evelyn as though she had become someone else.
Daniel finally whispered:
“How much?”
No one answered.
He looked at the trustee.
“How much is the family worth?”
The trustee replied calmly:
“Enough that your current lawsuit would be meaningless.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“You lied to me.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Our entire marriage.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“And?”
Evelyn didn’t answer.
He understood.
“You think I used you.”
“You did.”
“I loved you.”
“Maybe.”
His face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I don’t know anymore.”
Charlotte stood.
“This is insane.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Is it?”
“You never told Daniel.”
“Why would I?”
Charlotte’s voice became sharper.
“Because he’s your husband.”
“He was.”
Charlotte turned toward Daniel.
“We should leave.”
He didn’t move.
Evelyn watched.
The woman who had once been called ordinary was now sitting at the head of the table.
Daniel’s world had changed in less than five minutes.
But then the trustee placed another file on the table.
“There’s one more matter.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“Your business.”
He opened the file.
His company had received funding from a Carter family subsidiary.
For years.
The amount exceeded $60 million.
Daniel stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I built this company.”
“Yes.”
“But…”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You built it with money you didn’t know was mine.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You planned this.”
She shook her head.
“My father did.”
He stood.
“Then everything I’ve achieved is fake.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“You still worked.”
“You still built it.”
“But I didn’t do it alone.”
“No one does.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to choose me without the money.”
He laughed.
“I did.”
“You chose Charlotte.”
Silence.
Charlotte looked away.
Evelyn continued:
“You didn’t leave because I was poor.”
“You left because you thought someone richer would make you feel more important.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“That isn’t fair.”
“It isn’t.”
She looked down.
“But it’s true.”
He had no answer.
The trustee handed Daniel another document.
A merger proposal.
Charlotte’s company.
Daniel’s company.
Carter Global Holdings.
All connected.
Daniel stared.
“Charlotte knew?”
Charlotte stepped back.
“No.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Did you?”
Charlotte’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned.
“You knew?”
Charlotte said nothing.
“Did you know who Evelyn was?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“How long?”
“About six months.”
“And you never told me?”
Charlotte whispered:
“I needed you to stay.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Then at Charlotte.
He finally understood.
Everyone had been using him.
Charlotte wanted access.
The family wanted information.
Daniel wanted status.
Evelyn had wanted love.
And none of them had gotten what they thought they were buying.
The meeting ended.
Daniel walked outside alone.
Evelyn watched through the glass.
Margaret stood beside her.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
“That is honest.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“I still care about him.”
Margaret nodded.
“You don’t have to stop caring.”
“I know.”
“Just stop letting care decide everything.”
Evelyn looked at the city.
“I will.”
Then her phone rang.
A security officer.
“Miss Carter.”
“Yes?”
“Someone broke into your apartment.”
Evelyn froze.
“What did they take?”
The officer hesitated.
“Nothing.”
“Then what?”
“They left a photograph.”
She asked:
“Of what?”
“Your mother.”
Evelyn’s heart stopped.
Her mother had disappeared fifteen years earlier.
The photograph showed her alive.
Taken two days ago.
And beneath it was a message:
Your family isn’t the only one with secrets.
