The secret was Charlotte Reed.
Charlotte wasn’t simply Daniel’s new girlfriend.
She was his business partner.
Worse, she had been working with him for more than a year.
They planned to merge their companies.

They needed access to a certain private investment fund.
A fund controlled by the Carter family.
Daniel didn’t know who controlled it.
Charlotte did.
Evelyn’s grandmother’s lawyer explained:
“Charlotte has been trying to reach the trustees.”
“Why?”
“She wants financing.”
“How much?”
“Eight hundred million.”
Evelyn stared.
“For what?”
“An acquisition.”
“What acquisition?”
The lawyer placed another folder before her.
The target company was one of Evelyn’s family businesses.
Evelyn almost laughed.
“They’re trying to buy my company with my family’s money.”
“Yes.”
She sat silently.
It was so absurd that it almost became funny.
Then her phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered.
“What?”
“Evelyn.”
“What?”
“I want to talk.”
“About what?”
“The divorce.”
“You signed it.”
“I know.”
He sounded nervous.
“I made a mistake.”
Evelyn said nothing.
“I don’t want to lose you.”
She almost laughed.
Yesterday, he had walked away.
Now he wanted her back.
“Why?”
“Because I realized I still love you.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Daniel.”
“Please.”
“You didn’t realize anything.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means you changed your mind.”
“That matters.”
“No.”
Her voice became quiet.
“It doesn’t.”
He was silent.
Then:
“Charlotte and I ended things.”
Evelyn knew that was a lie.
“How do you know?”
“I do.”
“What if I don’t believe you?”
“Then I’ll prove it.”
She hung up.
Margaret watched her.
“He’ll come back.”
“I know.”
“Will you let him?”
“No.”
Margaret smiled.
“Good.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You knew this would happen.”
“I suspected.”
“You’ve been testing him.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No.”
“I have.”
“What?”
“Your whole family.”
Evelyn looked confused.
Margaret explained.
For years, she had watched the people around Evelyn.
Friends.
Boyfriends.
Employees.
Executives.
Everyone who knew the Carter name eventually behaved differently.
Daniel was no exception.
Then the lawyer interrupted.
“There is another development.”
“What?”
“Daniel has requested a meeting with the family trustees.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Why?”
“He claims he has evidence that you are concealing assets.”
Margaret smiled.
“Let him.”
Evelyn didn’t understand.
“Why?”
“Because he’ll walk into the meeting believing you’re desperate.”
“What happens then?”
“You’ll learn whether he is capable of humility.”
Evelyn laughed.
“I don’t think he is.”
Margaret nodded.
“Then prepare yourself.”
The meeting was scheduled for Friday.
Daniel arrived with Charlotte.
Evelyn was already seated at the table.
Charlotte stared at her.
She recognized Evelyn from the divorce proceedings.
She didn’t know anything else.
Daniel walked in.
His expression changed when he saw Evelyn.
“You’re here?”
“Yes.”
“I thought this was a trustee meeting.”
“It is.”
One of the trustees entered.
“Mrs. Carter.”
Charlotte looked confused.
“Mrs. Carter?”
Daniel frowned.
The trustee continued:
“Or should I say Miss Carter?”
Evelyn looked toward Daniel.
He slowly stood.
“What is happening?”
The trustee said:
“Mr. Cross, you are sitting in the presence of Evelyn Carter.”
Daniel laughed.
“I know who she is.”
“No.”
The trustee turned a document toward him.
“Do you?”
The document showed the ultimate beneficial ownership of Carter Global Holdings.
The name was clear.
Evelyn Margaret Carter.
Daniel stared.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“You…”
She said nothing.
The trustee continued:
“She is the principal heir to the Carter family empire.”
Charlotte’s face went pale.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Yes.”
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
He looked at the company records.
Then at Charlotte.
Then at Evelyn.
“You’re a billionaire.”
Evelyn corrected him.
“No.”
She held his gaze.
