Don’t Make a Drama, Her Husband Said — She Took Off Her Ring and He Froze!

Chapter 9

The next several months were difficult.

Claire and Evan stopped pretending.

They attended counseling.

They spoke honestly.

They set boundaries.

Evan gave Claire access to every financial account.

Every business record.

Every travel schedule.

No hidden phones.

No unexplained absences.

Trust wasn’t restored by promises.

It was rebuilt through repetition.

Small acts.

Every day.

Lily noticed the difference.

Her parents weren’t suddenly perfect.

But they were talking again.

One evening, she found them in the kitchen cooking together.

“You guys are weird.”

Claire laughed.

“Why?”

“You’re actually talking.”

Evan smiled.

“We’ve improved.”

“Barely.”

They laughed.

But the outside world wasn’t done with them.

The company Evan worked for was under investigation.

Victor was awaiting trial.

The board demanded Evan resign.

Instead, he chose to testify.

He admitted everything.

The affair.

The secrecy.

His own mistakes.

His role in uncovering the fraud.

The hearing lasted six hours.

Afterward, reporters surrounded him.

“Do you regret staying married?”

Evan looked toward Claire.

“Yes.”

The reporters reacted.

Then he continued:

“I regret the way I treated my wife.”

Claire watched from a distance.

“I don’t regret fighting for the chance to become someone worthy of her trust.”

The statement went viral.

Claire didn’t care about the headlines.

She cared that, for the first time, Evan wasn’t trying to protect his image.

He was telling the truth.

Months later, the court convicted Victor and several others.

Richard’s involvement was confirmed.

Claire finally got answers about her mother.

She visited Sarah’s grave.

Evan came with her.

Claire placed flowers there.

“I finally know.”

She looked at the gravestone.

“I’m sorry it took so long.”

Evan stood beside her.

“You found the truth.”

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“We found it.”

He looked at her.

“That means a lot.”

They stood in silence.

Then Claire asked:

“Are you happy?”

Evan thought.

“Not yet.”

She turned.

“Why?”

“Because I know happiness isn’t something I can demand.”

Claire nodded.

“Good answer.”

Evan smiled.

“I learned from you.”

She almost laughed.

“Don’t get sentimental.”

“I won’t.”

They drove home together.

For the first time in months, Claire wore her wedding ring.

Evan noticed.

He didn’t mention it.

At home, Lily saw it.

“Mom!”

Claire smiled.

“What?”

“You put it back.”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean you’re okay?”

Claire looked at Evan.

“We’re trying.”

Lily smiled.

“That’s good.”

The family sat down for dinner.

No cameras.

No reporters.

Just three people trying to rebuild something broken.

But another surprise awaited them.

A letter arrived the next morning.

It was from Claire’s mother.

Not the old one.

A second letter.

It had been hidden by Thomas Reed and instructed to be delivered only after the fraud investigation was completed.

Claire opened it.

One sentence made her blood run cold.

Evan’s father was not the only person who knew the truth.
