Don’t Make a Drama, Her Husband Said — She Took Off Her Ring and He Froze!
Chapter 2
Claire barely slept.
At two in the morning, she sat on the edge of the bed staring at the empty space beside her.
Evan had moved to the guest room.
He hadn’t spoken to her since the argument.
Claire didn’t cry.
Not yet.
She was too numb.
Instead, she opened an old wooden box from the back of her closet.
Inside were documents she had started collecting months earlier.
Bank statements.
Hotel receipts.
Corporate expense reports.
And photographs.
Claire wasn’t paranoid.
She had noticed the pattern.
Evan had claimed certain business trips didn’t exist.
He had said the company reimbursed travel expenses.
But Claire had found hotel charges on days when he was supposedly out of town.
She had seen Jessica’s name.
Jessica Morgan.
Twenty-nine.
A consultant working with Evan’s company.
Claire had never confronted her.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she wanted proof.
She took out her phone.
There was one final photograph.
Evan and Jessica walking out of a hotel.
Hand in hand.
Claire stared at it.
The photograph had been taken three weeks earlier.
She had not wanted to believe it.
Now she did.
At six-thirty, Lily came downstairs.
“Mom?”
Claire quickly put the documents away.
“Morning.”
Lily looked toward the hallway.
“Where’s Dad?”
“In the guest room.”
“Did you two fight?”
Claire hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Is it bad?”
Claire looked at her daughter.
She didn’t want Lily caught in the middle.
“We’re working through something.”
Lily frowned.
“Are you okay?”
Claire hugged her.
“I will be.”
At eight, Evan came downstairs.
He looked exhausted.
He picked up his coffee.
“We need to talk.”
Claire remained seated.
“Go ahead.”
“You shouldn’t have taken off your ring.”
Claire looked at him.
“That bothers you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re my wife.”
She almost laughed.
“Apparently not enough.”
He sighed.
“Claire, I made a mistake.”
She stared at him.
“How many times?”
He didn’t answer.
“That’s what I thought.”
“I ended it.”
“With her?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
Evan looked away.
“Last night.”
Claire shook her head.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
She slid the hotel photograph across the table.
Evan went completely still.
His face drained of color.
“Where did you get that?”
Claire leaned back.
“That doesn’t matter.”
“It absolutely matters.”
“No.”
She stood.
“What matters is that I know.”
Evan picked up the photograph.
His hands trembled.
Claire had expected anger.
Instead, he looked afraid.
“Who else has seen this?”
“No one.”
“Claire.”
“What?”
He lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what you’ve gotten yourself into.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Evan looked toward the windows.
Then at the front door.
“Some things are bigger than you think.”
“Your affair?”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“This isn’t about Jessica.”
Claire stared at him.
“Then what is it about?”
Evan hesitated.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the caller ID.
His face changed.
He walked outside.
Claire watched through the window.
Evan answered.
His expression hardened.
Then he said four words.
“She knows about everything.”
Claire felt a chill.
Everything?
What exactly had her husband been hiding?
