Don’t Make a Drama, Her Husband Said — She Took Off Her Ring and He Froze!

Chapter 7

Evan had been sixteen when his own father worked with Richard Carter.

He remembered going to the Carter house once.

He remembered seeing Claire’s mother crying.

He remembered his father shouting.

And he remembered a black sedan leaving the driveway.

He had never understood what happened.

Now pieces came back.

“I was there,” Evan said.

Claire stared.

“Where?”

“At your house.”

“When?”

“The night before your mother’s accident.”

Claire’s breath caught.

“What did you see?”

“I don’t remember everything.”

“Try.”

Evan closed his eyes.

“I heard your father arguing with someone.”

“Who?”

“I think it was Victor.”

Claire went silent.

“What happened?”

“Your mother came into the room.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she’d go to the police.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“Then?”

“My father dragged me outside.”

Evan looked at her.

“I didn’t know why.”

“Did you see my mother again?”

“No.”

Claire stared at him.

“You’ve carried that memory for twenty-three years.”

“I didn’t understand it.”

“But you remembered.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked away.

She was devastated.

Not because Evan had known.

Because the truth had been sitting in the background of her life all along.

That night, Claire couldn’t sleep.

She walked outside.

Evan followed.

“You can hate me.”

“I don’t hate you.”

“You should.”

Claire shook her head.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You cheated on me.”

“Yes.”

“You hid things.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“But you also stayed.”

Evan didn’t understand.

“When things became dangerous, you could have disappeared.”

“I wouldn’t leave you.”

“Why?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because I love you.”

Claire looked down.

She still had her wedding ring in her pocket.

She hadn’t worn it.

But she hadn’t thrown it away either.

That mattered.

The next morning, investigators arrested one of Victor’s associates.

He agreed to cooperate.

He revealed that Richard Carter had ordered the staged accident.

Victor had helped cover it up.

And someone else had witnessed the planning.

Someone who had been sixteen years old.

Evan.

But Evan had been unaware of what he was seeing.

The case became national news.

Victor was arrested.

Richard’s estate was seized.

The old company was investigated.

Claire’s family name became associated with scandal.

Reporters waited outside the house.

Claire refused interviews.

She focused on Lily.

One evening, Lily came home.

She hugged her mother.

“Everyone is talking.”

“I know.”

“Is Grandpa a bad person?”

Claire took a breath.

“Your grandfather did terrible things.”

“Did he love us?”

Claire looked at Evan.

Then back at Lily.

“Yes.”

“Can someone love you and still hurt people?”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then how do you know who to trust?”

Claire held her close.

“You watch what people do when there is nothing to gain.”

Lily nodded.

Then she asked:

“What about Dad?”

Claire looked at Evan.

He stood in the doorway.

“What about him?”

“Do you trust him?”

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, she said:

“I’m learning how to.”

Evan smiled faintly.

It was the most honest answer she could have given.

But repairing a marriage would be harder than exposing a crime.

Especially when Claire knew the affair hadn’t disappeared.

Jessica still existed.

And Claire needed to decide whether forgiveness was possible.
