Daniel and Emily went into hiding.
They stayed at an old hunting cabin his father had owned.
No phones.
No internet.
No lights after dark.
Emily didn’t complain.
She was brave.
Too brave for an eight-year-old.
One night, Daniel asked:
“Are you scared?”
“Yes.”
“Why don’t you say it?”
She looked at him.
“Because Mom said brave people can be scared.”
Daniel smiled.
“She was right.”
Emily asked:
“Did you know my mom before me?”
“Yes.”
“Was she your friend?”
“Yes.”
“Did you love her?”
Daniel looked away.
“As a friend.”
Emily nodded.
“She loved you too.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Mom said you were the only person who ever believed her.”
He swallowed.
“I should’ve stayed.”
Emily looked at him.
“Would you have saved her?”
“I don’t know.”
“But you’re trying now.”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
At dawn, a truck approached the cabin.
Daniel raised his rifle.
The door opened.
Sarah stepped inside.
Emily screamed.
“Mom!”
She ran into her arms.
Daniel stood frozen.
Sarah looked older.
Thinner.
Exhausted.
But alive.
They hugged.
Daniel felt tears in his eyes.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I almost was.”
“Why did you disappear?”
“To keep Emily alive.”
“You could have called.”
“I did.”
He frowned.
“When?”
“Every time I knew someone else would answer.”
Daniel understood.
The phones had been monitored.
The company had been watching.
Sarah sat down.
“I need to tell you everything.”
She explained.
Richard Vale had created the intimidation network.
Martin Blake worked for him.
They used employee information to silence whistleblowers.
Sarah discovered the operation.
She created the trust.
She hid the evidence.
Then she disappeared.
But there was one final secret.
“The trust isn’t five million anymore.”
Daniel stared.
“How much?”
“Thirty-two million.”
He nearly fell backward.
“What?”
Sarah nodded.
“They stole the money from the company.”
She had recovered it through legal settlements and hidden investments.
But the money wasn’t what worried her.
“The evidence proves Richard used public officials to protect the operation.”
Daniel understood.
“That’s why everyone is compromised.”
Sarah nodded.
Then she looked at him.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“Richard knows you are Emily’s guardian.”
“He knows.”
“He wants you to sign the trust over.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He’ll never get it.”
Sarah smiled.
“I knew you would say that.”
A vehicle suddenly appeared on the hill.
Then another.
Sarah stood.
“They found us.”
Daniel moved the children toward the back exit.
“How many?”
“Too many.”
He looked at Sarah.
“Stay with Emily.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Give them exactly what they came for.”
Sarah stared.
“No.”
Daniel smiled.
“Trust me.”
He walked outside.
