“Dad, Can She Eat With Us?”—Then the Single Dad Did Something Nobody Expected
Chapter 7
Daniel read the letter twice.
His father had known Sarah.
He had helped her hide evidence.
He had also known about the trust.
But why had he never told Daniel?
The letter explained.
Sarah believed someone inside the company had infiltrated local law enforcement.
She didn’t know whom.
Daniel’s father had promised to help.
But before they could move the evidence, he became ill.
He died.
Sarah continued alone.
And eventually disappeared.
At the bottom of the letter was a location.
An old chapel.
Daniel drove there.
Emily insisted on coming.
“No.”
“Mom said I should remember.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re right.”
They entered the chapel.
Dust covered the pews.
A priest was waiting.
He was elderly.
“Sarah said you’d come.”
Daniel froze.
“She was here?”
“Three years ago.”
“Where is she now?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“She told me not to.”
The priest handed Daniel an envelope.
“She wanted this delivered only if Emily was with you.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a key.
And one sentence:
Trust the man who chose family over money.
Daniel looked confused.
The priest smiled.
“Your father told me the same thing once.”
“Who is the key for?”
The priest pointed toward the sacristy.
There was an old safe.
The key opened it.
Inside was a hard drive.
And a legal document.
The trust.
Emily was the sole beneficiary.
Five million dollars.
But access to the trust required one more condition.
Emily had to be represented by a guardian chosen by Sarah.
Daniel read the name.
His hands shook.
Daniel Reed.
Emily looked at him.
“What does it mean?”
“It means your mother trusted me.”
The hard drive contained evidence.
Videos.
Financial records.
Audio.
A complete chain of payments.
Richard Vale.
Martin Blake.
Private security contractors.
Corrupt officials.
Then Daniel saw something else.
His own accident report.
The one from eleven years earlier.
The report had been falsified.
Daniel’s near-fatal workplace accident had not been caused by equipment failure.
Someone had tampered with the machinery after Daniel filed his safety complaint.
His father’s letter suddenly made sense.
Sarah had started helping Daniel before he even knew she was protecting him.
The entire story went back to the beginning.
Daniel closed the laptop.
Emily asked:
“Are we going to find Mom?”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
The priest spoke quietly.
“You should hurry.”
“Why?”
“Because Sarah came here two weeks ago.”
Daniel froze.
“She did?”
“Yes.”
“She told me something.”
“What?”
“She said if you ever opened that safe, they would know.”
Daniel looked at the ceiling.
A faint click sounded.
He realized too late.
A camera.
Someone had been watching.
