“Dad, Can She Eat With Us?”—Then the Single Dad Did Something Nobody Expected

Chapter 14

Years later, Emily was eighteen.

The trust officially became hers.

The legal ceremony took place at the foundation.

Sarah handed her the documents.

Daniel stood beside them.

“You ready?”

Emily nodded.

“What will you do with the money?”

She smiled.

“Help people.”

Daniel laughed.

“You sound like your mother.”

Sarah smiled.

“Good.”

Emily looked at the documents.

“Can I keep the foundation?”

“Yes.”

“Can I change the name?”

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“To what?”

She pointed to the wall.

The foundation was named after Sarah.

Emily shook her head.

“It should be named after both of you.”

Daniel and Sarah exchanged a look.

“No,” Sarah said.

Emily smiled.

“Then I’ll call it The Table Foundation.”

Daniel laughed.

“The what?”

“The table.”

She explained.

“Because everything started when you let me sit down.”

Daniel looked emotional.

Sarah hugged her.

Emily continued:

“I want to help families who think they have nowhere to go.”

Noah smiled.

“I’ll help.”

“You’re still terrible at spreadsheets.”

“I can learn.”

Everyone laughed.

The foundation expanded again.

A scholarship program.

A food initiative.

Emergency housing.

Worker protection.

Legal aid.

All built around one principle.

Nobody should have to beg to belong.

Daniel eventually retired.

He spent more time on the farm.

Sarah continued working part-time.

Noah became a teacher.

Emily became a lawyer.

They all remained close.

One evening, Daniel sat at the old restaurant.

The same table.

The same window.

Sarah sat across from him.

“You’re thinking.”

“Yes.”

“About that night?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“It changed everything.”

Daniel nodded.

“Funny how something so small can.”

“What was small?”

“One child asking for a seat.”

Sarah took his hand.

“Nothing about that was small.”
