“Dad, Can She Eat With Us?”—Then the Single Dad Did Something Nobody Expected
Chapter 12
Two years later, the foundation had expanded to five states.
Daniel still worked.
Sarah returned to her career as an investigator.
Noah was ten.
Emily was ten too.
They attended the same school.
They were inseparable.
One Friday, Noah came home upset.
“What happened?”
He threw his backpack down.
“Some kid said Emily isn’t really family.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because she has a different mom.”
Daniel sat beside him.
“Families aren’t about matching last names.”
Noah frowned.
“Then what are they about?”
Daniel looked toward the kitchen.
Sarah and Emily were making cookies.
“They’re about who shows up.”
Noah thought about it.
“That means Emily is family.”
“Yes.”
“Even before Mom came back?”
“Yes.”
“Then I’m glad she stayed.”
Daniel smiled.
“So am I.”
That evening, Sarah found him on the porch.
“You know what I realized?”
“What?”
“We built this family without planning it.”
Daniel laughed.
“That’s one way to describe it.”
She sat beside him.
“When you met Emily at that restaurant…”
“I know.”
“You had no idea.”
“No.”
“And you still said yes.”
Daniel smiled.
“Noah asked.”
Sarah laughed.
“Of course he did.”
They watched the children play.
Then Sarah said:
“I have a question.”
“What?”
“Do you ever regret not walking away?”
Daniel knew what she meant.
He shook his head.
“Never.”
She looked at him.
“Even when it was dangerous?”
“Yes.”
“Even when you didn’t know whether I’d come back?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He thought.
“Because Emily didn’t ask me to solve her life.”
He looked at Sarah.
“She just asked if she could eat with us.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“And somehow that changed everything.”
Daniel smiled.
“Yes.”
