“Dad, Can She Eat With Us?”—Then the Single Dad Did Something Nobody Expected
Chapter 10
Richard Vale stepped from the lead vehicle.
Martin Blake stood behind him.
Three armed men surrounded them.
Richard smiled.
“Daniel.”
Daniel kept his hands visible.
“You’ve been busy.”
“So have you.”
“Where’s the trust?”
“Safe.”
Richard laughed.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
“I understand exactly.”
“The money can change your life.”
“It already has.”
Richard frowned.
“How?”
“I have my son.”
He pointed toward the cabin.
“And a woman who should never have had to disappear.”
Sarah appeared in the doorway.
Richard’s face changed.
“You.”
Sarah stepped beside Daniel.
“It took you long enough.”
Richard shook his head.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
“I was tired.”
Martin stepped forward.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Sarah laughed.
“No. You don’t know what I’ve done.”
She held up a small device.
“Everything is streaming.”
Richard froze.
“What?”
“The federal team is listening.”
Daniel smiled.
The vehicles behind Richard were surrounded by agents.
Martin looked terrified.
Richard reached for his weapon.
The agents moved faster.
He was arrested.
Martin was arrested.
The remaining men surrendered.
The entire operation collapsed within hours.
Federal prosecutors seized the company’s records.
Officials connected to Richard were suspended.
The safety fraud was exposed.
Workers who had been threatened were protected.
But Daniel wasn’t interested in headlines.
He wanted one thing.
Emily.
She ran toward him.
He caught her.
“Dad!”
He froze.
She had never called him that before.
Sarah smiled.
“You earned it.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Did I?”
“Yes.”
Later that night, they sat around the fire at the cabin.
Sarah explained the final detail.
The trust had been created not just for money.
It funded a foundation for families of workers who were harmed by corporate negligence.
Emily would inherit it when she turned eighteen.
Until then, Daniel was her guardian.
The responsibility frightened him.
“I don’t know how to do this.”
Sarah smiled.
“You’ve been doing it already.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
She was laughing with Noah.
The two children were roasting marshmallows.
Sarah followed his gaze.
“She needs you.”
“I know.”
“You always did.”
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“Why me?”
“Because when everyone else chose their jobs, their money, or their reputation…”
She paused.
“You chose people.”
Daniel smiled.
“That was a long time ago.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“That was who you were.”
Then she handed him a letter.
His name was on it.
The handwriting was Sarah’s.
Daniel,
If Emily ever calls you Dad, don’t argue.
He laughed through tears.
“That woman knew everything.”
Sarah smiled.
“She did.”
