CEO THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST A CLEANER—UNTIL SHE FIXED HIS $450 MILLION BLUEPRINT IN SECONDS!

Chapter 8

Adrian held a press conference two days later.

Every major Chicago news network attended.

The Harbor Point project was officially suspended.

Adrian stood behind the podium.

“This company failed.”

The room became silent.

“We failed because we allowed financial pressure to override engineering judgment.”

He continued.

“We ignored environmental warnings.”

“We ignored structural concerns.”

“And we ignored people who tried to stop us.”

Then he looked directly at the cameras.

“My father was responsible for some of those decisions.”

Lena watched from backstage.

Adrian’s voice remained steady.

“But the person who refused to sign the false report was Daniel Brooks.”

Lena felt tears forming.

Her father had spent twelve years believing his name had been destroyed.

Now the truth was public.

Adrian announced that Westbridge would fund a complete environmental cleanup.

The cost would exceed $80 million.

The board threatened to remove him.

Adrian accepted.

“If saving the company requires hiding what we did, then the company doesn’t deserve to survive.”

The statement changed everything.

Investors reacted badly.

The stock fell.

Employees panicked.

The media followed the story for weeks.

But the public response was different.

People praised Adrian for admitting the truth.

The city ordered an independent investigation.

The Harbor Point project was redesigned.

The contaminated site was cleaned.

The underground flood-control infrastructure was restored.

And Lena was offered the position of chief structural consultant.

She accepted.

Not because she wanted Adrian’s approval.

Because she wanted to finish what her father had started.

Months passed.

Adrian and Lena worked together every day.

They argued.

They challenged each other.

They stayed late.

They drank terrible office coffee.

Their relationship slowly changed.

One evening, Adrian found Lena asleep over a stack of blueprints.

He placed his jacket over her shoulders.

She woke.

“You’re still here?”

“So are you.”

“I’m working.”

“You’ve been working for fourteen hours.”

She smiled.

“You’re the CEO. Shouldn’t you tell me to go home?”

He hesitated.

“I’ve learned not to tell you what to do.”

She laughed.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Adrian sat beside her.

“You know what I remember most about the day we met?”

“What?”

“You were cleaning the conference room.”

“Yes.”

“You looked at a $450 million blueprint and immediately knew it was wrong.”

Lena smiled.

“You thought I was just a cleaner.”

“I did.”

“And now?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Now I think you were the only person in the building actually looking.”

She smiled.

Their hands touched.

Neither moved away.

But then Lena noticed something on the blueprint.

A small marking.

WP-18.

She stared.

“What?”

Adrian leaned closer.

The marking referred to another underground structure.

One they hadn’t found.

Lena’s smile disappeared.

“How many chambers were there?”

Adrian looked at the plans.

“I don’t know.”

She circled the marking.

“Then we aren’t finished.”
