CEO THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST A CLEANER—UNTIL SHE FIXED HIS $450 MILLION BLUEPRINT IN SECONDS!

Chapter 2

The meeting lasted two hours.

Lena stood at the end of the conference table while six senior engineers examined the mistake she had found.

At first, they tried to prove her wrong.

Then they discovered she wasn’t.

The problem wasn’t one measurement.

It was a chain of errors.

The foundation plans had been revised three times.

Each revision had been approved.

But one engineer had copied an earlier drainage model into the newest structural file.

The mistake had survived every review.

It had also survived the company’s $8 million engineering audit.

Lena watched the professionals work.

She said almost nothing.

When they asked questions, she answered.

When they disagreed, she explained.

Eventually, Adrian Mercer leaned back.

“How long would it take to correct this?”

The chief engineer looked uncomfortable.

“Several weeks.”

Lena shook her head.

“Not if you rebuild the model from the original survey.”

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“The problem is you’re trying to correct the current model instead of identifying where the geometry changed.”

The chief engineer frowned.

“You’re saying our entire model is compromised?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at Lena.

“How long would you need?”

“If I had access to the files?”

“Two days.”

The chief engineer laughed.

“You can’t be serious.”

Lena looked at him.

“You asked.”

Adrian raised his hand.

“Enough.”

He looked at Lena.

“Come with me.”

She followed him into his office.

His office occupied the top floor.

The city stretched below them.

Lena had cleaned the room hundreds of times.

She had never spoken to him here.

Adrian closed the door.

“You’re not a cleaner.”

Lena smiled faintly.

“I clean.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She looked toward the window.

“I used to be an engineer.”

“What happened?”

“My family needed me.”

Adrian didn’t ask more.

“What do you want?”

Lena thought about it.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not true.”

She looked at him.

“You’re right.”

“What do you want?”

“To do something I’m good at.”

Adrian nodded.

“I can give you that.”

Lena hesitated.

“I don’t want charity.”

“Neither do I.”

He placed a folder on the desk.

“Temporary engineering consultant.”

She looked at it.

“You’re serious?”

“You found a $450 million mistake in five minutes.”

“I noticed something.”

“You did more than that.”

Adrian leaned against the desk.

“Tomorrow morning, you’re working with the engineering team.”

Lena looked at the folder.

“What happens if they don’t want me there?”

“They’ll deal with me.”

For the first time, Lena smiled.

“Then I’ll be here at eight.”

She left.

Adrian watched her go.

But he wasn’t thinking about the blueprint.

He was thinking about something else.

Lena hadn’t been impressed by the building.

She hadn’t been intimidated by the executives.

And she hadn’t seemed interested in his money.

That was unusual.

Very unusual.

The next morning, Lena arrived wearing a simple black blazer instead of her cleaning uniform.

The engineering department stared.

Someone whispered.

“That’s her?”

Another answered:

“The cleaner?”

Lena heard them.

She kept walking.

At 8:03, she entered the project room.

On the wall was a giant rendering of Harbor Point.

Below it were the words:

THE FUTURE OF CHICAGO.

Lena stared at the image.

Then she noticed something else.

The original survey coordinates were missing.

Someone had removed them.

She turned toward the project manager.

“Where are the original site measurements?”

He hesitated.

“They’re archived.”

“Where?”

“Why?”

“Because I need them.”

He smiled.

“Who authorized you?”

Before Lena could answer, Adrian’s voice came from behind them.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian walked into the room.

Then he looked at Lena.

“Find the mistake.”

She nodded.

“I will.”

Neither of them knew that someone in the room was already terrified of what she might discover.
