The next morning, Victor called an emergency board meeting.
He arrived with lawyers.
He accused Adrian of sabotaging the Harbor Point project.
“He’s emotionally compromised,” Victor said.
“He has personal history with the former engineer.”
Several board members looked uncertain.
Adrian sat silently.
Lena stood beside him.
Victor continued.
“The project has already suffered delays.”
Then he turned toward Lena.
“And we have an unqualified employee interfering with a $450 million development.”
Lena didn’t react.
Victor smiled.
“You were hired to clean offices.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“She found the structural error you missed.”
Victor’s face tightened.
“And she has no formal authorization.”
“She has mine.”
The board chairman looked at Lena.
“What do you have?”
Lena placed the drive on the table.
“Proof.”
Victor laughed.
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
She connected the drive.
The screen displayed the original environmental report.
Victor’s face changed.
Then the emails.
Then the financial transfers.
Then the land purchases.
The room became silent.
Victor stood.
“These are fabricated.”
Lena shook her head.
“They were recovered from the sealed chamber.”
Adrian looked at the board.
“Your signatures are on some of them.”
Victor backed away.
“This is illegal.”
“What’s illegal?” Adrian asked.
“Opening the chamber.”
“Or what was inside?”
Victor said nothing.
The board chairman called federal investigators.
Victor tried to leave.
Two officers stopped him.
But before he was arrested, Victor looked at Adrian.
“You think you’re better than your father?”
Adrian stared.
Victor smiled bitterly.
“Your father knew about the contamination.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?”
“He knew.”
Lena looked at Victor.
“Then why was Daniel fired?”
Victor laughed.
“Because he refused to sign the report.”
Adrian’s face went pale.
His father hadn’t hidden the truth.
He had suppressed it.
And Daniel Brooks had tried to expose him.
Lena felt the weight of the revelation.
Her father had been telling the truth.
But there was something else.
Victor continued.
“Your father didn’t build this company.”
Adrian stared.
“He built the reputation.”
Victor was taken away.
The room remained silent.
Adrian looked at Lena.
“I need to know everything.”
She nodded.
“So do I.”
They returned to the chamber.
There was another file.
A handwritten letter from Adrian’s father.
It was addressed to Daniel Brooks.
You were right.
I should have listened.
If something happens to me, make sure the project never reaches construction.
Lena read it twice.
Adrian closed his eyes.
His father had known.
But he had never confessed publicly.
Lena looked at him.
“Your father wasn’t proud of what he did.”
Adrian whispered:
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
