Nothing happened.
Then Lena noticed a mechanical lock.
She remembered something from her father’s old toolbox.
A key.
She had kept it since childhood.
She had never known what it opened.
She took it from her purse.

The door opened.
Inside was a narrow room filled with old engineering documents.
Photographs.
Blueprints.
Hard drives.
And a metal filing cabinet.
Adrian looked stunned.
“This belongs to my father.”
Lena opened the first drawer.
Inside were reports from twenty years earlier.
They revealed that Harbor Point had originally been designed as a flood-control project.
The development company had planned to construct underground infrastructure capable of protecting the surrounding neighborhood.
But the design was abandoned.
Why?
Because it was too expensive.
Instead, the company purchased cheaper land and modified the project.
The chamber contained evidence that executives had knowingly ignored structural warnings.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
A report stated that engineers had discovered contaminated soil beneath the site.
The contamination came from an old industrial plant.
If disturbed, it could spread into the river.
The environmental report had been suppressed.
Lena looked at Adrian.
“Your company knew.”
Adrian shook his head.
“I didn’t.”
“You’re not responsible for what your father did.”
“But I’m responsible for what happens now.”
She nodded.
Then she found another folder.
It contained emails.
One message came from Victor.
Keep the environmental report buried until after the groundbreaking.
Lena’s hands tightened.
Adrian read it.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lena looked at the financial documents.
Victor had secretly purchased land surrounding the development.
If the project went forward, its value would explode.
He would make hundreds of millions.
Adrian understood.
“He wanted me to build it.”
“And take the blame if something happened.”
Adrian stared at the documents.
Then the lights went out.
The chamber became completely dark.
A door slammed somewhere above.
Lena grabbed Adrian’s arm.
Someone had locked them inside.
They heard footsteps.
Then the sound of metal scraping.
Adrian tried the door.

“There has to be another exit.”
They found an emergency tunnel.
It led beneath the old warehouse.
They crawled through darkness until they emerged behind the construction fence.
Security vehicles were arriving.
Someone had called the police.
Victor had reported Adrian and Lena for trespassing.
But they had something Victor didn’t know.
The evidence was already copied.
Lena had transferred everything to a secure drive.
Adrian looked at her.
“Now what?”
