Bank Employee Humiliated a Poor Single Dad — Unaware He Owns the Entire Bank
Chapter 11
Daniel reached the hospital twenty minutes later.
Lily was frightened.
He took her hand.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
“Am I going to be okay?”
“Yes.”
Daniel tried to make his voice steady.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
The doctor approached.
“We’re ready.”
“Do it.”
“There is one issue.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“The insurance authorization hasn’t cleared.”
Daniel nearly laughed.
“Of course it hasn’t.”
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
“We need confirmation.”
Daniel reached for his phone.
Nothing.
Then another voice spoke.
“I’ll handle it.”
Daniel turned.
Richard stood in the hallway.
He had followed him.
“What are you doing here?”
“Being your brother.”
Richard made one phone call.
Within minutes, the hospital received the guarantee.
Daniel stared.
“How?”
Richard smiled slightly.
“I have my uses.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You sound like Dad.”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“That’s the first time you’ve said that.”
“I mean it.”
Lily was taken into surgery.
Daniel and Richard waited together.
Two brothers who had spent years apart sat beneath the same hospital light.
Neither knew what to say.
Finally Richard spoke.
“Were we really poor?”
Daniel smiled.
“I think Dad wanted us to believe we were.”
“Why?”
“So we’d know what it felt like not to matter.”
Richard looked at him.
“And now?”
Daniel looked through the glass at the operating room.
“Now I think he knew money can’t make you worthy.”
Richard nodded.
Hours passed.
The surgeon finally came out.
“She did well.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Richard exhaled.
Daniel hugged him.
Richard froze.
Then hugged him back.
It was the first time they had ever embraced.
The next morning, investigators arrived with a breakthrough.
Victoria Lang had been arrested at the airport.
She had been carrying documents linking her to the offshore accounts.
But she denied controlling the scheme.
She blamed Victor.
Victor blamed Richard.
Richard admitted his role in the share manipulation.
But he insisted he never stole the four hundred million.
That left one question.
Who had?
The answer came from the audit.
The money had never left the bank through ordinary channels.
It had been moved through a dormant charitable foundation.
The foundation had one director.
Daniel’s father’s former estate planner.
Thomas Hale.
Daniel stared at the report.
“No.”
Thomas had been with him from the beginning.
He had helped him understand the trust.
He had stood beside him outside the bank.
He had known every secret.
Daniel called him.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then his phone received a message.
I’m sorry. I wanted to protect you.
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard read the message.
“He’s running.”
They contacted federal agents.
But Thomas had disappeared.
Inside his office, they found a note.
Daniel opened it.
It contained only one sentence.
Your father knew I would eventually betray him.
Daniel’s hands went cold.
Because that meant the final traitor had been beside him from the beginning.
