A Single Dad Fell Asleep on His Boss’s Shoulder — What Happened Next Changed Everything

Chapter 7

Within minutes, police cars surrounded the building.

News vans arrived.

Federal investigators followed.

Richard Hayes tried to escape through the rear entrance.

He didn’t make it.

The evidence Marcus had sent had already reached federal authorities.

The financial records were too extensive to bury.

Richard was arrested.

The two men with him were detained.

But Daniel still had one question.

His wife.

He needed to know why.

Victoria found her address.

She lived in another state.

Daniel didn’t know whether he wanted to see her.

But Noah deserved answers.

They flew there two days later.

His ex-wife opened the door.

When she saw Daniel, her face changed.

“You know.”

Daniel nodded.

“Everything.”

She looked at Noah.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Noah stared at her.

“Why did you leave?”

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel said:

“Tell him.”

She sat down.

She explained everything.

Richard had approached her before she left.

He told her Daniel was going to lose his job.

Then his house.

Then custody of Noah.

He offered her money to disappear.

She accepted.

Daniel felt anger rise.

“You believed him?”

“I was scared.”

“You left your son.”

“I know.”

“You let him think you didn’t want him.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked away.

She cried.

“I regretted it every day.”

Noah stood silently.

Then he asked:

“Do you still love me?”

She covered her face.

“Yes.”

Noah nodded.

“I love you too.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

It wasn’t forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

When they returned to Chicago, everything had changed.

Richard’s arrest became national news.

The company board resigned.

Victoria became interim chairman.

And Daniel was officially cleared.

But Victoria offered him something unexpected.

A promotion.

Daniel laughed.

“After everything?”

“Especially after everything.”

“What position?”

“Director of Operations.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s a big jump.”

“You earned it.”

He smiled.

Then Victoria added:

“With normal working hours.”

Daniel laughed.

“That’s impossible.”

“It’s a condition.”

“What if I refuse?”

“I’ll fire you.”

Daniel stared.

“You’re serious.”

“Completely.”

He accepted.

For the first time in years, Daniel began leaving work at five.

He ate dinner with Noah.

He went to baseball games.

He helped with homework.

He slept.

And slowly, his son changed.

The teacher called one afternoon.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“Noah hasn’t fallen asleep in class for three weeks.”

Daniel smiled.

“Thank you.”

“He seems happier.”

Daniel looked at Noah through the classroom window.

“So am I.”

Later that evening, Victoria visited their apartment.

She brought Noah a birthday present.

A baseball glove.

Noah ran toward her.

“Thank you!”

Victoria smiled.

Daniel watched them.

He couldn’t deny how naturally she had become part of their lives.

But he was afraid.

Afraid of losing it.

Afraid of misunderstanding what it meant.

Then Victoria turned toward him.

“You know what your son told me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He said I make you happy.”

Daniel smiled.

“He’s eight.”

“Apparently, he’s observant.”

Daniel laughed.

The same joke.

The same smile.

Then Victoria’s expression became serious.

“Daniel.”

“Yes?”

“I know everything we’ve been through makes this complicated.”

He nodded.

“But I don’t want to pretend I don’t feel something.”

Daniel looked at her.

Neither moved.

Then Noah shouted from the living room:

“Dad! Mom called!”

Daniel froze.

Victoria raised an eyebrow.

“Mom?”

Noah looked confused.

“She said she wants to talk.”

Daniel smiled awkwardly.

Victoria whispered:

“That was unexpected.”

Daniel nodded.

Very unexpected.
