A Single Dad Fell Asleep on His Boss’s Shoulder — What Happened Next Changed Everything

Chapter 5

Victoria sat down slowly.

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

She didn’t answer.

“Victoria.”

“My father wasn’t killed in an accident.”

Daniel went silent.

Victoria looked toward the sleeping child.

“He died seventeen years ago.”

“What happened?”

“He was investigating financial fraud at the company.”

Daniel frowned.

“Your company?”

“Before it was mine.”

She explained that her father had been the original founder of Hayes & Morgan.

He had discovered that several executives were secretly moving money through shell companies.

Before he could expose them, his car crashed.

The police ruled it an accident.

Victoria never believed them.

“Did you investigate?”

“For years.”

“And?”

“I found nothing.”

Daniel looked at the file.

“Until now.”

Victoria nodded.

“The same subsidiary involved in your case existed back then.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“So this isn’t about me.”

“No.”

“It’s about your father.”

“And possibly my company.”

Daniel looked at the sleeping Noah.

“Then why are they after my son?”

Victoria shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Both turned.

Noah was still asleep.

Victoria stood.

She checked the security monitor.

Nothing.

Then the screen flickered.

A camera feed disappeared.

Another went black.

Daniel whispered:

“Someone’s inside.”

Victoria reached for her phone.

“Security.”

Before she could call, the apartment lights went out.

Noah woke.

“Dad?”

Daniel moved toward him.

“It’s okay.”

A loud crash came from the kitchen.

Victoria grabbed a flashlight.

They moved silently.

The kitchen window was open.

Rain blew inside.

A small envelope lay on the floor.

Victoria picked it up.

Inside was an old photograph.

Her father.

Daniel recognized the location.

The same warehouse address listed in the company records.

On the back was a handwritten message:

HE HID THE ORIGINAL FILES WHERE YOU NEVER LOOKED.

Victoria stared at it.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“What’s behind him?”

She zoomed in.

A brick wall.

A faded sign.

Then Daniel noticed something.

“The number.”

“What?”

“Building number.”

Victoria looked.

17.

Daniel remembered something from the financial records.

Warehouse 17 had been closed for fifteen years.

“That’s where we’re going.”

Victoria shook her head.

“Not tonight.”

“We need answers.”

“And we have a child with us.”

Daniel looked at Noah.

She was right.

They waited until morning.

At sunrise, Victoria arranged private security.

They drove to Warehouse 17.

The building was abandoned.

Inside, dust covered everything.

But one room looked different.

The floor had fresh scratches.

Someone had recently moved something.

Daniel found a hidden trapdoor.

Beneath it was a metal box.

Victoria opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Contracts.

And a videotape.

Victoria found an old player.

The recording showed her father sitting behind a desk.

He looked exhausted.

“If you’re watching this, I’m probably dead.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

Her father continued.

“The people stealing from the company aren’t doing it for money.”

Daniel frowned.

“They’re building leverage.”

The video continued.

“They’ve created false financial records connected to employees. When necessary, they can destroy careers, families, and reputations.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

Her father’s next words made both of them freeze.

“One employee has been selected as the next scapegoat.”

A document appeared on screen.

Daniel’s name.

Victoria whispered:

“No.”

Her father continued:

“They will use his employment records to make him responsible for millions in fraudulent transactions.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

The plan was already underway.

Then another page appeared.

The date was four years earlier.

The exact month Daniel’s wife left him.

Victoria stopped breathing.

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at her.

“My divorce wasn’t a coincidence.”

Victoria nodded.

“No.”

Someone had deliberately destroyed Daniel’s family.

And they were preparing to destroy him next.
