A Single Dad Fell Asleep on His Boss’s Shoulder — What Happened Next Changed Everything
Chapter 9
One year later, Daniel sat in the stands at Noah’s baseball championship.
Rain threatened overhead.
The field was muddy.
Parents shouted from the bleachers.
Noah stood at second base.
Victoria sat beside Daniel.
She was wearing a ridiculous baseball cap Noah had bought for her.
Daniel smiled.
“You look terrible.”
“I know.”
“You paid fifteen dollars for that?”
“Your son insisted.”
“He has expensive taste.”
Noah looked toward them.
“Stop talking!”
Daniel laughed.
The game resumed.
Noah’s team was losing by one run.
Two outs.
Final inning.
Noah stepped up to bat.
Daniel stood.
“Come on, buddy.”
Victoria stood beside him.
Noah swung.
The ball flew toward center field.
The crowd erupted.
Noah ran.
First base.
Second.
Third.
Then home.
His team won.
Noah sprinted toward his father.
Daniel caught him.
They hugged.
Victoria joined them.
For a moment, Daniel looked around.
A year earlier, he had been alone in an office at midnight.
Exhausted.
Afraid.
Convinced that working harder was the only way to protect his son.
Now he understood something.
Being a good father wasn’t about sacrificing every piece of yourself.
It was about being there.
Really being there.
That night, Daniel and Victoria returned home.
Noah fell asleep on the couch.
Daniel carried him to bed.
When he returned, Victoria was standing in the kitchen.
“You know,” she said, “you used to fall asleep on my shoulder.”
Daniel smiled.
“Only once.”
“Once was enough.”
He stepped closer.
“Do you regret it?”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
“Neither do I.”
She looked at him.
“Good.”
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He had been carrying something for weeks.
A small box.
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“Daniel.”
“I know this isn’t perfect.”
She laughed softly.
“Nothing about us has been perfect.”
“I know.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple ring.
Victoria stared.
“Are you asking me?”
Daniel smiled.
“I’m asking you to stay.”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“That’s not exactly a proposal.”
“It’s the best I can do.”
She laughed.
Then she kissed him.
“Yes.”
Daniel smiled against her forehead.
From upstairs, Noah shouted:
“Does this mean she’s my stepmom?”
They froze.
Then burst out laughing.
Daniel shouted back:
“Go to sleep!”
Noah replied:
“I knew it!”
Victoria laughed.
“He’s definitely your son.”
Daniel smiled.
“Unfortunately.”
She nudged him.
“Fortunately.”
And for the first time in years, Daniel went to bed without worrying about tomorrow.
