The day Olivia Hart was fired began like every other Monday.
She arrived at Sterling Meridian at 7:42 a.m., carrying a paper cup of coffee and a folder filled with reports she had spent most of Sunday finishing.
For eleven years, Olivia had worked for the company.
She had started as a junior analyst.
Then she became a senior financial coordinator.
Later, she was promoted to operations director.
She had earned every position without family connections, personal favors, or political influence.
She knew the company better than almost anyone in the building.
That was why the email waiting in her inbox seemed impossible.
Mandatory executive meeting — 8:30 a.m.
No explanation.
No agenda.
Olivia frowned.
She took her coffee into the conference room.
Several department heads were already there.
Everyone looked nervous.
Then the doors opened.
A woman entered.
Tall.
Elegant.
Confident.
She wore a charcoal suit and carried herself like someone who had never needed permission to enter a room.
Olivia recognized her immediately.
Victoria Monroe.
Her husband’s first love.
The woman she had heard about only in passing.
Ethan’s college girlfriend.
His family had once expected them to marry.
They had separated years before Olivia met him.
At least, that was what Ethan had said.
Victoria walked to the head of the table.
“Good morning.”
No one answered immediately.
Then the chairman stepped forward.
“Effective today, Victoria Monroe is the new executive director of Sterling Meridian.”
Applause followed.
Olivia didn’t clap.
She couldn’t.
Victoria’s eyes moved across the room.
Then stopped on her.
For one brief second, something flickered in Victoria’s expression.
Recognition.
Then it disappeared.
“Ms. Hart,” Victoria said.
Olivia sat straighter.
“Yes?”
“I’ve reviewed your department.”
“Good.”
“There are significant inefficiencies.”
Olivia frowned.
“I’d be happy to discuss them.”
Victoria smiled.
“I don’t think discussion will be necessary.”
The room became silent.
“I’ve decided to restructure operations.”
Victoria placed a folder on the table.
“Your position is being eliminated.”
Olivia stared at her.
“Today?”
“Immediately.”
Someone shifted uncomfortably.
Olivia looked at the chairman.
“Does he agree with this?”
The chairman avoided her eyes.
Victoria answered instead.
“The decision is final.”
Olivia closed the folder.
“Understood.”
She stood.
But before leaving, Victoria leaned toward her.
“Don’t take it personally.”
Olivia looked directly at her.
“I don’t.”
She walked out.
Her hands were shaking.
Not because she had lost her job.
Because she already knew something Victoria didn’t.
The company she had just been fired from wasn’t truly controlled by the board.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone whose identity had been hidden from almost everyone.
Someone who happened to be Olivia’s husband.
And Victoria had just fired the one employee who could expose exactly who he was.
