I Thought My Fiancée Was Choosing Her Male Best Friend — Then I Discovered She Was Protecting Him From a Deadly Secret

Chapter 1

Ethan Carter had never been a jealous man.

At least, that was what he told himself.

He trusted people.

He trusted his fiancée.

He trusted the relationship they had spent nearly four years building.

So when he finally told Sophia that he was uncomfortable with how close she had become to her male best friend, he expected an argument.

Maybe anger.

Maybe tears.

What he never expected was silence.

Not a single word.

Not a defense.

Not even an insult.

Just silence.

It happened on a Tuesday evening in their apartment.

Sophia was sitting at the kitchen table with her laptop open, answering messages from work.

Ethan had just come home.

He put his keys down, removed his jacket, and walked into the kitchen.

“Are you still working?”

“Almost done.”

He watched her for a moment.

Then he said:

“Can we talk?”

Sophia looked up.

“Sure.”

Ethan sat across from her.

“I need to tell you something before it becomes a bigger problem.”

She closed the laptop.

“What happened?”

He took a breath.

“It’s about Daniel.”

Her expression changed slightly.

Daniel Morgan had been Sophia’s best friend since college.

They had known each other for almost ten years.

Ethan had known him for three.

At first, he had liked him.

Daniel was funny.

Helpful.

Easygoing.

He had been the person Sophia called when her car broke down.

When she needed advice.

When she was stressed.

When she couldn’t sleep.

That had never bothered Ethan.

Until recently.

There had been more calls.

More late-night conversations.

More private jokes.

More canceled plans.

And, increasingly, moments when Ethan felt like the third person in his own relationship.

He finally said:

“I think you’re getting too close to him.”

Sophia stared at him.

Ethan continued.

“I trust you. But I don’t feel comfortable with how much space he has in our relationship.”

Silence.

Sophia’s expression became unreadable.

Ethan waited.

She said nothing.

“Sophia?”

Nothing.

He leaned forward.

“I’m not accusing you of cheating.”

Still nothing.

“I’m telling you how I feel.”

She looked down.

The silence continued for almost a minute.

Then Sophia closed her laptop completely.

She stood.

“I’m tired.”

She walked toward the bedroom.

Ethan followed.

“That’s it?”

She stopped.

“That’s all you’re going to say?”

She turned around.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

“You’ve said what you wanted to say.”

Ethan frowned.

“So?”

“So I’ll think about it.”

He expected anger.

Instead, she walked away.

That night, they slept in different rooms.

Ethan stared at the ceiling until sunrise.

He replayed the conversation again and again.

He had expected Sophia to reassure him.

Instead, she had gone completely silent.

And for the first time since he proposed to her, Ethan wondered whether her silence wasn’t an attempt to avoid a fight.

Maybe it was guilt.

Maybe it was fear.

Or maybe she was hiding something far worse than a friendship.

He didn’t know.

But the next morning, Ethan woke to discover something even stranger.

Sophia had deleted every photograph of Daniel from her social media.

Not just one.

All of them.

And she had changed her phone password.

Ethan stared at the message she had sent him before leaving for work.

We need to talk tonight.

For the first time, Ethan wasn’t sure whether he wanted answers.

He was afraid of what they might reveal.
