I Thought My Fiancée Was Choosing Her Male Best Friend — Then I Discovered She Was Protecting Him From a Deadly Secret
Chapter 6
The prosecutor agreed to investigate.
But he warned them.
“Your evidence is circumstantial.”
Daniel frowned.
“There’s enough to open an investigation.”
“Not enough to arrest Victor.”
“What do we need?”
“The missing account records.”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“That’s the problem.”
“What?”
“The original files were stored in one place.”
“Where?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The company where I worked.”
“They’re gone?”
“They were sealed after the fraud investigation.”
The building had been abandoned.
The records were scheduled for destruction.
They had forty-eight hours.
Ethan and Daniel entered the building at night with federal authorization.
Sophia waited outside.
The archive room was buried on the fourth floor.
Dust covered everything.
Daniel found the box.
Inside were paper records matching the digital files.
But the final ledger was missing.
Ethan searched.
Nothing.
Then he noticed something strange.
One cabinet had a false bottom.
Inside was a notebook.
Victor’s handwriting.
The records were there.
But the most important page contained something unexpected.
A name.
Sophia’s father.
Ethan froze.
“Why is your name on this?”
Daniel stared.
“Sophia’s father?”
He nodded.
“He invested in Victor’s company.”
The records showed Sophia’s father had accepted money.
Then later tried to expose Victor.
Daniel looked stunned.
“That’s impossible.”
Ethan read further.
Sophia’s father had disappeared eighteen years earlier.
Officially, he had died in an accident.
Daniel looked at him.
“What if it wasn’t an accident?”
Ethan’s blood ran cold.
Sophia had spent years believing her father died accidentally.
What if he had been another victim?
They took the notebook.
Before leaving, Ethan noticed a final entry.
The daughter cannot know.
He stared.
Sophia.
Victor hadn’t simply targeted Daniel.
He had been connected to Sophia’s family for decades.
The entire investigation was suddenly personal.
